Forty-Niner Country Club (Pics)

I've posted some pictures of Tucson, AZ's very own Forty-Niner Country Club. Its a pretty old course that use to hold a pga event. Its claim to fame is that Jack Nicklaus took and 11 on the 10th hole back in the day.

This is the first time Ive ever taken photos of a golf course. Any suggestions are welcome.

Try again. Link doesn't work.

Do you live in Tucson?

Thanks Jeff for the link.

I haven't played this course yet in my trips to Tucson. So many courses, so little time. El Rio & Silverbell renovations are on my list as is the new course at Tucson National by Lehman.

Hi John,

Good photos.  We try and travel to Tucson as undercover snowbirds every year.  Give us some reasons for posting/playing this course besides the $ factor?  I have played Omni, La Paloma etc.  What is your background with this course?

I've played it a few times.  It is pretty short and tight.  Nothing real interesting about the course.

It finishes with a pretty short par three and we have always had a number of bets riding on the last hole.  It is actually a very fun way to finish because it seems like there is always a big putt at the end of the round.

I've never gone out of my way to play it, but have enjoyed myself when I did.

Jason,

I've probably played this course two dozen times. It is short and tight, but it isn't like anything else you'll find in Tucson. There are mesquite trees lining just about every hole and plenty of great views of the surrounding mountains. Its not in the same league as a Omni Tucson National, but it is a personal favorite and offers a more authentic Tucson flavor.

Steve,

I've played Silverbell three times in the past three weeks. The conditioning is awful (really horrible), but the new layout is far superior to the old. The architect they brought in put some serious thought into the previously bland design. The opening hole is pretty interesting. It is a long par 4 (440 from the whites) with water down the left and a couple large bunkers which sit middle-rightish of a very, very wide fairway. A ton of options off the tee on the very first hole.

As for El Rio -- its the same old course with a couple more bunkers guarding tee shots which run through dog legs. I wouldn't bother with it and I live 10 minutes away.

What are your thoughts on Bailey's Preserve at Saddlebrooke or the newly renovated Arthur Pack or Lehman's new course at Tucson National?

Interesting comments on Silverbell and El Rio given that Tucson munis at Randolph and Dell Urich are usually in decent condition.

The architect for the renovations at El Rio and Silverbell is Ken Kavanuagh. I believe he did his work pro bono.

Here's the website for Forty Niner:

www.fortyninercc.com

It's a William F. Bell design.Good value. Is the course well maintained?
