Third Hole - Makefield Highlands (Rick Jacobson) - Par 3
« on: February 02, 2006, 04:59:03 PM »
Makefield Highlands is a course of ups and downs (the ups far outweigh the downs, however).

The third hole is a short par 3 (160 yards from the tips) that has some interesting hole locations.

The view from the tee:

The green stretches all the way to behind the right hand bunker. The left hole location shown is by far the easiest on the green and a shot can be flown right at it.

Things get a bit trickier on the right side though. A spine runs through the green parallel to the line of play and the right side of the green slopes to the left and away from the golfer. Over the right bunker the fairway is banked to allow a shot to trundle onto a green and crawl back to a rear hole location.

The right half of the green from the hole location shown above.

The view of the right half of the green from behind the green.

I find this green to be an attractive feature, with an interesting spin on a Redan type hole (instead of angle, the golfer is required to use distance control as a shot flying all the way to a right hole location is liable to keep going into the collection area shown).

Slightly OT:  I think the hole would look MUCH better without the exposed ridge behind the cart path and back bunker to the left of the green -- either if the area wasn't so elevated or if it was looked more natural.  Was it artificially raised, or is it natural?  With my relatively untrained eye, I wasn't sure.

It does seem like an interesting hole to play, though, and I think the bunkers fit the land very well.

Jay,

One of the downs of MH is the artificial framing mounds, especially on the back nine where I am made to wonder if Rees Jones and Rick Jacobson sharing initials is a coincidence.

This particular one hides the 7th tee.

Fortunately, the playability between the mounds is, for the most part, superb.
