Dye used trees effectively in Kohler. He even used a Willow.

Boy, I have to disagree, especially if you're talking about Blackwolf Run.  I'd turn that place into Chainsaw National, especially the hole they call "Unter Den Linden", an abortion of a hole where the German name suggests that you have to play under a big linden tree.  You don't, but the tree ruins the hole.  There are other examples, I'm sure, but I've tried to rid my cerebellum of the experience.

So Terry, you are disagreeing with Mr. Dye's use of trees? Or is it any tree?

I do disagreee with you insults towards "Unter der linden". If anything, that is the perfcet use of a stand of trees.

How about the tree on the 16th at Sawgrass, 17th CPC?  even more perfect examples of perfection.

That par three at Kohler (River course I think) is actually the worst use of trees that I've ever seen or played and it that hole belongs in the silly seasons skills challenge, not an otherwise excellent golf course.  I think it's number 10 that is the short 4 par with the river and trees down the right side that tempts a long high draw to go for the green . . . now that's one of the best uses of trees I've seen.

I don't think one should have to play over or around trees from the tee on a 3 par.

Some great uses of trees that I recall #14 at Cuscowilla (as maddening as it can be for tee balls hung out to the right) and the trees on the straight 4par 12th at Prairie Dunes (some like 'em, some hate 'em, but at least they make you think).

No. 2 at Holston Hills has an interesting use of a single tree on a right-to-left cape hole.  As I recall from the 2004 Mid-Am qualifier there, it is placed right where a straight-ball hitter would aim his tee shot and is too tall too clear for most players, so it requires the player to choose a hard fade left of the tree or a draw to the right of it and over a bunker.   Can't figure out how to copy the picture that is posted of the hole in the course profile on this site.
