Britain's Longest 9 Holes? 3845 Yards
« on: September 25, 2005, 01:22:01 PM »
I think this nine might be the longest in the country.

Any guesses on the course (it's 18 holes)?

It's NOT a "modern monster" and I was really surprised this course had a 9 that's so long!

I'd say it's Painswick if you took the least topographical route.  ;)

I think it's Royal Birkdale.  If not, the Burma Road (Wentworth West).

I thought it might be the Glashedy front nine from the blacks at Ballyliffin, but that's a mere 3816.

Burma Road would have been my guess.  But it's not all that surprising an answer, so I imagine it's wrong.

Birkdale, Wentworth West and Royal St Georges are all wrong by at least 100 yards.

I'm not sure Paul but it's not the longest as this does belong to a modern monster.

Nuts!  I didn't see Marc's post.  I was quite confident it was the longest.

Still for this course it's the back 9 so maybe it's the longest back 9 in Britain :D   The front 9 is only about 3150 yds.

That Players Club course is by Adrian Stiff.  I think he's a fan of Painswick; but you wouldn't have guessed with this monster!

Walton Heath New.

Now I can relax again. It plays very long when the wind gets up, too

Thanks Paul

Incidentally, when the pros played the US Open qualifier on both Walton Heath courses earlier in the year, they played from the white tee on the 15th New, ten yards further up than the back (purple) tees. I'm not sure why but someone else in the crowd seemed to think it was because of the headwind on that hole. But the 18th holes on both aren't that different in direction of play and a few pros were hitting into the bunkers on those holes - they must be about 350-360 yard drives. If that was the reason they played a shorter hole it seems a strange one given the distance modern pros hit the ball.

Yep.  Walton Heath New.

Never played the New, just the Old one time.  I'd always imagined the New to be significantly shorter than the Old.

Congratulations Richard - no excuse for me as that is where we nearly met!  I am often surprised by the synchronicity that occurs on this site. We arranged a game on the phone yesterday afternoon and I asked Richard if he knew the answer to this one.  He couldn't have known the question would be asked and hadn't logged on when he called me.  After I posted about the US Open qualifying Richard got in touch to say he too had been standing between the two 18th greens watching the field come in.

Richard and I are going to meet this Friday PM for a round at Woking - anyone else available?

Tony - I would love to join you, especially as I have never played Woking. But in fact I will be touring round parts of Cheshire with Mark Rowlinson as we try to work out what might be a good agenda for the GCA Ryder Cup/Buda Cup next year (and I hope you will both be playing ;).

Maybe another time?

Quite right Paul, the Old was originally the breather course. Here's a link to a photo tour:
