Is Merion East definitely closed? I just spoke to a friend the other day and he said he was scheduled to play Friday.

Tom P -

As you walk Merion, think of a good place in the shade for someone to plop down and observe play for several groups, where one is likely to see a lot of different numbers posted.

TP

If it makes you feel any better, I don't think they are charging to attend PCC for the two days of qualifying.

One of the young men who qualified this week is Cole Willcox, a senior to be at Malvern Prep and one of our up and comers at PCC.  He lost in the finals of the Club Championship and knocked off one John Sawin in the semi-final with a smooth five birdie performance in 13 holes 6 & 5.  I got to watch it first hand.

For those that want to attend PCC during the AM it is about 15 minute car ride from Merion.  Also there is a train station down in Conshohocken that you would need to take a 5 minute cab ride (2 miles at most) to the club.

TP, hopefully the course will look good.  I hit balls there on Sunday and it looked good and the rough is up.  The USGA wanted the rough at 4 inches by August 1 in case we ran into a drought.

Wayne, was disappointed that I didn't get to play on Monday & Tuesday but my wife Cindy delivered a beautiful baby girl on Monday afternoon.  Bridget Caroline, who joins her sister Delaney.  I think what I missed most about Monday was that I was paired with Chris Ault it would have been fun to watch him shoot 63.  But then again with how much I talk out on the course I don't know if he could of shot that number with me talking to him all day.

He if anyone wants to volunteer, I am running the driving range and scoring at PCC and I need a few bodies.  Also we need marshalls as well.  We need people for all 4 days but more so for Monday and Tuesday.

Please contact Merion Golf Club, I think they have a volunteer sign up on the club's web site, which I think is Meriongolfclub.org or .com.

Congratulations to you and Cindy on the latest addition to the Walsh family.  Man, that would have been fun to see you and Chris Ault play together.  Is there no other opportunity to qualify as of this date?  I guess not.

I may be able to help out a day or two, Chet.  I do want to watch some of the action at Merion so I don't know if I can commit to 4 days...I'll be over at Merion a bit later today and I'll see what I can fit in.

Best to you and yours,
Wayne

Congratulations - best possible reason to miss a tee time in my book. :)

This is mostly for Tom Paul, but I wanted to let everyone know that John Hurley from O'Neill, NE has qualified for the Amateur.

He is going to be a senior (in fact will be missing about his first 5 to 7 days of school for the Amateur) at a small Catholic school and lives in a town of no more than 3,000. He shot the course record 63 at Wild Horse during our State Match Play and finished 5th in our State Amateur last week at Omaha CC.

The kid is known for going Hank Kuehne deep. He had 50 yards to the 18th at WH in his CR round, drove a 370-yard hole at Omaha CC and I've personally seen him hit driver, 8-iron to a 550 yard par-five.

The best prospect in this state, probably ever. He recently had his swing speed clocked at 134 mph by Tom Sieckmann at his golf lab.

Don't take my word for it -- just find Tom Paul and you will find Mr. Hurley at Merion.  ;)

Mike -

With my third child due on August 23rd, I do not think I will be able to make the 90 minute drive north. I do look forward to watching it though. Let me know when you can make the journey south to play as well.

Jim

Jim,

Well, that's the best reason I've heard yet for not attending.  Best of good fortune with everything.  ;D

I'm sensing this fall might be a good time for me to visit Baltimore.  I'll certainly let you know when and I'll look forward to meeting you.

If folks are getting together some evening, I'd enjoy being included.

Thanks,
Mike

Tony Chapman:

Thanks for telling me that about Nebraska's John Hurley. I watched him unload one in the quarterfinal match at WH 400 yards on the nose. He has a different trajectory than most of these long hitting young kids and he told me he basically altered it for the wind at home (keeps his drives a lot lower than these other long hitting kids). I walked most of that round that day with his mom and dad and I told him I hoped to see him at Merion and that I'd look him up and follow him if he made it and I will. He looks the part of the long hitting superb athlete. There must be a lot of midwest red meat and corn in that kid's genes. If he ups his understanding of safety first course management the sky may be the limit for Nebraska's John Hurley. There's no question that he wants to go to a southern golf school so he can play all year and he definitely intends to try to make the tour. At Merion East particularly he better be prepared to course manage his length efficiently or that course will get him.

Tuesday night could be a good night to plan a group dinner.  I can't get out there much during the week but plan to go there for the likely playoff on Tuesday night should speed of play and lack of weather delays allow.
