Golfweek Magazine Post-Modern 100?
« on: July 09, 2005, 10:32:22 PM »
On another thread Paul Turner rightly asks if many of the highly regarded new courses will stand the test of time.   Golfweek's Modern list is quickly becoming dominated by relatively new golf courses - suggesting that the "Dark Ages" perhaps extended well behond the 1970's into the early to mid-90's.

Has architecture taken a quantum leap, or are we merely enamoured with the latest and greatest?  Is it time to tri-furcate the "best" lists?

Will some of the brilliant work of C & C migrate down the list?  Remember Talking Stick North?  Cuscowilla comes to mind.  (I like them both, by the way.)

I can't say I follow the rating list that much, but have you met, played or watched Vince Gill play golf?  I am wondering if he truly is a 2 handicapper.
It must be kept in mind that the elusive charm of the game suffers as soon as any successful method of standardization is allowed to creep in.  A golf course should never pretend to be, nor is intended to be, an infallible tribunal.

He is a 2 at times but like most can fluctuate during different times of the year.
And..if some of the C&C work goes down the list, I am sure they will have more that replaces it.....

Lynn,

A few years ago I played in a 5-man scramble where Vince was our celebrity.  Average handicap of the four of us was around 12 I'd guess.  We par the first two holes, then go 17 under on the next 16 to take home the bacon.  Gill has PLENTY of game and hits it a mile.  Funny, unassuming guy who played in shorts with his shirt-tail out.  I'd say a 2 is about right, but I'll bet redanman could take him.

Mike

FWIW, the next year I was paired in the same event with Lou Graham, the nicest guy you'll ever meet.  We shoot 4 under in a five man scramble with a former U. S. Open champion leading the team.  I skipped out on dinner to avoid the well-deserved harrassment.

Golfweek's bifurcated list (Classic & Modern) started in 1997. We used to have 10-14 new courses a year make each new subsequent top-100 Modern list. That was in an era when course openings numbered 250-350 annually.

In the past three years, new course openings are down to 125-150 a year, and the number of new courses making our list each season for the first time is down to 4-5. There will be much less turnover in the future, so that the pace of decline in the standing of new courses that make our list is also likely to slow down. In other words, I don't think there's a strong enough argument for a third, Post Modern list.

Besides, we've now created a separate grouping of Top-40 Best New Courses to cover those that have opened in the previous two calendar years. So we're already highlighting those innovative layouts without having to showcase them on the top-100. In other words, we have plenty of lists already.
