Generallly speaking, official events are organized, at least in spirit, by Ran. If you wish to organize one and have it "sanctioned", speak to Ran.

Generallly speaking, official events are organized, at least in spirit, by Ran. If you wish to organize one and have it "sanctioned", speak to Ran.

Examples:

Official GCA event for 2005:  Casa de Campo trip taken in late March (planned at least in part by and attended by Ran)

non-official (everything else):  The King's Putter IV, April 9-10

Dixie Cup II in October will seem to fall under Official status, since he planned much of it.

Some that I can think of:

Official for 2005:

Casa de Campo, March 27-31
Pittsburgh, possibly July
Dixie Cup II, Southern Pines area, Oct 21-23

Unofficial:

Winter Conference, Essex County, NJ, Feb 19
The King's Putter, Stevinson Ranch, April 9-10
Sutton Bay, Apr 29-May 1
Hidden Creek, May 15(?)-16
Ryder Cup, Littlestone/Deal, England, May 18-20
Yale, Aug 21

Scott gave you great examples. It is really if Ran puts it together or some group of us. KP. Cuscowilla last fall, Winter gathering and Ryder Cup event in England have been very successful numbers wise and great fun. I have made all but one KP and last years Ryder Cup.

I added Sutton Bay to the list above, which I originally forgot.

what's the Pittsburgh one???

Ran casually mentioned it some time several months ago, possibly even late 2004.  It might be off by now, I don't know.
My guess was Fox Chapel, due to it's #7 spot on The Next Fifty list.   Maybe a round at JVB's Hannastown, since he posted it last year.  All speculation.

EDIT:  Here's the post where Ran mentioned it, 2nd paragraph from bottom:

Since the original question was regarding "events" and not just tournaments, I think you'd have to consider Pat Mucci's gatherings as well (probably in the unofficial category).

Kevin,

Pat Mucci's Hidden Creek gathering is already listed under unofficial events.

Scott Burroughs,

What do you know about the MANY conversations I've had with Ran concerning each event that I've held ?

How did you nominate yourself to the position of who decides which events are sanctioned and which aren't ?

Kevin Reilly,

On what basis did YOU declare the Hidden Creek event as unofficial ?

Patrick,

I didn't use the term "sanctioned", which was in quotes to start with, George did, although I did quote his post, but that was just because I didn't feel like giving my alternate definition.  In reality, the terms "official" and "unofficial" are just terms thrown around here fairly casually.  The general consensus (and I think even Ran may have started it) was that an "official" GCA event was one that Ran both helped plan (or planned all of it) AND attended.  Since Ran's name is not listed on the HC event as an attendee (thus far last I saw), I didn't consider it "official", based on my definition.

It is certainly possible that my definition differs from Ran's, and thus some events would fall under different "true" categories.

It does not surprise me that Ran has a hand in your event.  He loves the course and knows Mr. Coore personally to some degree.  I'm sure with your attention to detail and affection for architecture, this will be another successful event.

Scott Burroughs,

Ran continues to be nervous about returning to Hidden Creek, site of one of his bitterest defeats.  The memories are far, far too painful for him to bear.

It was all there for the taking, and then, it happened.
From the thrill of near victory, he's still experiencing the agony of defeat.

Early on, he confirmed his attendance, but, minor issues like his family and business, coupled with his prior traumatic experience at Hidden Creek caused him to bow out.

I consult with Ran and TEPaul on all get togethers.

I ask TEPaul his opinion on every issue.
Then, whatever his answer, I do the opposite.
That's why these events have been so successful.

Bill Coore's attendance was through the efforts of Roger Hansen, TEPaul and Bob Randquist, and I"m thankful to all three for their help.

Having Bill Coore speak about his work and his work at Hidden Creek and then having the opportunity to play Hidden Creek the same day is a rare opportunity.

As I said to you, your family comes first, but, if you can find a way to get to Egg Harbor Township, you'll enjoy it.
