Paul- Do you plan anymore before and after exercises on other holes?

This is a great thing. Comparing the differences between these Pics and the ones taken at The Cal Club, I'd say Beverlys resto is much more subtle.

I'm wondering about the hole on the front, maybe the 4th hole. Dogleg left with the perimeter of the property to the right (a fence?) perhaps the NE corner of the site?

That holes resto piques my curiousity. Could you elaborate. Maybe on the fabulous 8th hole too?

thanx

I was trying to figure out why you ever hit a driver there and then I remembered; its you.

The 4th green at Beverly is BEAUTIFUL!  Hopefully more than one chainsaw was deployed inside the dogleg.  Can't wait to see it and the (hopefully) de-treeed 5th.

Shivas, I believe I may have seen that drive at Beverly, and I believe I recall hearing that it was a singular accomplishment.  ;D  Seriously it was a major boomer and I think left about 70 yards, though I don't remember what happened after that on the hole.  ;D

Paul,

Thanks for posting these great before/after photos. The hole and the work look strikingly like the short par 4 5th at Ross's Minikahda CC in Minneapolis, which as you know Ron Prichard also restored last year.

This is Minikahda's 5th restored. As at Beverly, the greenside bunkering restoration is excellent--deeper and reshaped.

Best,

Adam:

Yes, I plan to do more before/after shots.

Unfortunately, only two problems.

One, the weather doesn't allow me to compare the course with green grass and with trees in bloom.

Two, I am mostly computer illiterate and don't know how to post photos.  Tommy N had to do those for me!

My plan is to reshoot the course in June or so and then post the pics here then!

Adam, the fourth hole is a MUCH improved hole.  Prichard put in a new back tee - almost 400 yards now - removed a bunch of trees from the inside of the dogleg and replaced the Bob Lohman bunkers that had been on the outside of the dogleg (not in Ross style!) with a very large bunker on the inside of the dog-leg.  This hole offers a TON of options, but is filled with peril.  The greenside bunkers were rebuilt in their previous locations and the bunker behind was restored.  The green was also expanded to its original size and some other tree removal was done.

As far as #8, tee squared, bunkers redone, fairway bunker about 60 yards from green restored, and the back 1/2 of the green was rebuilt, with a very interesting chipping area to its immediate right.  Tree removal around the green will make it a much better hole as well.

Shel:

As strong of a player as Shivas is, it will take some ingenuity on his part to hit driver from the new back tee at #4.

No doubt it can be done but not without taking some real risk!

Yes.

I am very excited about the new fourth, but the fifth is absolutely STUNNING!

Squared tee, new fairway bunker left, new bunker just short of the green, the other two bunkers redone in Ross style, and tree removal right which enables the hole to play in its natural right-to-left style, as a very slight dogleg.

Tough, beautiful and treacherous!

Doug:

Thanks for the photo.  I visited Minikahda before, during and after your restoration and I must say that Prichard did an excellent job there as well!

Besides the fact that both Beverly and Minikahda are both Ross courses that have been redone by Prichard, both can claim the great Chick Evans as a Champion of our respective golf course!

Paul- Great! What a positive!

Shiv- Re; #4. I can't remember where, but when I came to #4, I had recently golfed a similar hole, so I knew not to get suckered.  I chose less club off the tee and more club in. For someone who hits wedges into all the pars 4 in the greater chicagoland area, I bet this hole is refreshing, to you. My advice, cherrish hitting long iron into this green, and then relish getting up and down from the bunker. ;D

Re No. 4:

The FANTASTIC green there does not accomodate a long-iron well and I can imagine Ross encouraging the better player to cut the corner and have a short-iron approach.  I hit a rare draw with a 3-wood from the tee that moved left approximately 20 yards and still ran through the fairway, leaving approximately 180 yards in.  With the trees, the smart play requires two equal shots of 200 yards +/-.  I'm guessing that's not what THE GENIUS envisioned.

Can't wait to see the revisions.

When Southwest offers the $39 special from Nashville to Midway this summer, a day trip might be in order!

Paul,
I think what's happened here is that TommyN took the pictures off his webspace and you are looking at cached versions of them. I only see little boxes with an x in the middle.

Tommy - is this true?
