Pinehurst - Watch it on television
« on: June 27, 2005, 01:47:18 AM »
At the last moment, I was convinced by my wife to go to the U.S. Open at Pinehurst.  This irritated me for two reasons: (a) I'd wanted to go all along, but couldn't convince her to go, and (b) I'd already declined staying at the immaculate Gracely estate before scrambling to find a room at a Marriott in Raleigh. :)

I have limited experience attending majors (sort of).  I attended last year's open at Shinnecock Hills.  I've attended about a dozen Masters.  Of the three venues (Augusta National, Shinnecock Hills, Pinehurst), Pinehurst is my least favorite to watch a tournament at.

While the greens may be fascinating to play, and while they may require exceptional management to perform well consistently, they are absolutely the most difficult greens to watch a tournament on.  Because of the crowned greens, you could not see the hole once the pin was removed.  (From the bleachers, you can see the hole--at least until the weather requires the USGA to empty them--which seems to be on all weekdays and weekends.)

Without being able to see the hole, it erased any suspense from putts.  You would just sit there and try to judge from the player's posture and demeaner whether there was any opportunity for the putt to drop.  When considering that the preponderance of putts were struck from greater than fifteen feet, that made their reaction less relevant.

I wish I'd simply listened to the tournament on radio.

(That being said, I can't wait to play the course as soon as possible!)

Carlyle - I get the drift of your post re Pinehurst, but what is your preferred medium for watching from home - TV or radio? Yor heading suggests TV, your text suggests radio. :)

I watch overwhelmingly on TV, but on the occasions when I am in my car listening to a big event like the Ryder Cup, the suspense on radio can be even more effective than TV.

By the by, I'm sure that The Old Course is just as bad if not worse in this regard - the extended back tees mean that nearly every hole overlaps the one before it, so the gallery can't get anywhere near the greens except on 17-18 and out around the Loop. It's even tough to spot the hole locations from the adjacent grandstands when the flags have been removed. Point being, if you're looking to actually follow the golf tournament (and not just look at the course or soak up the atmosphere), I'd stay home next month as well and enjoy the Open on TV/radio...

Cheers,
Darren

Your thoughts are right on in MHO.  So much so that it confirms my thinking some years back when this subject was discussed.  My thought at that time was that attendance would be limited on the course.  Ther would be large tent villages with closed circuit TV, hole by hole coverage - and your wife, Carlyle, would say: "We're at the Open !"  You're shift on the course would arrive by jitney.

Carlyle,

Let me know when you'll be up to play it and I'll find a room for you at The Gardens of Gracely Estates.  I've been saving $7/week so I can have the $350 ready when the tee-time is made.
