Barbougle Dunes photos from "The Golfer" magazine
« on: July 09, 2004, 08:50:39 AM »
Check out some of the photos of Barnbougle Dunes from the latest issue of "The Golfer" magazine.  What a site for a golf course.....

Talk about 3 international stunners opening up in a short time frame:  Cape Kidnappers, Barnbougle Dunes, and St. Andrews Beach.

The pictures were taken by Jeff Jennings and David Scaletti

#15, par 4, 358 yards

#9, par 4, 467 yards

#9, from behind the green

#18, par 4, 454 yards

#17, par 4, 432 yards

It took me a couple of minutes to figure out what we were seeing in the middle photo, which was incorrectly labeled #9 from behind the green.

It is actually a photo from in front and to the left of the ninth green, from along the dune ridge.  The large bunkers in the middle ground are the approach bunkers at the par-4 tenth [the tenth green is middle left in the photo], and then on the horizon you see the fairway and fairway bunkers of the par-5 11th, which appears to blend right into the tenth from this angle.  It's an unusual perspective, because when you're playing the tenth hole the second shot is uphill and you can't see any of the eleventh hole.

Please note, the magazine asked me to write descriptive captions of the pictures without actually sending the pictures ... they just told me which holes they were using!

Does the above mean that contrary to some folks admonishments about not using pictures to form impressions and comments about the quality of the architecture; good photos do have some merit and usefulness. ;) ;D 8)

Ian is right, those photos really do look great!  The only problem for me is I sit here and look at these photos of the amazing course, and I say to myself, what chance do I realistically have of getting there on the next ten years!

If for some reason, travels take me in that area  I would go out of my way to play there, but I think for most of us, we will have to leave it to our friends down under to experience and joy the pleasures of the place.

Fess up!  That first photo is really a Mike Miller painting.

Damn! My air miles don't convert to Quantas!

I plan to get out there next year.  Should I bring a tent and a work visa?

Congrats to all the players for how things look.

Where is Scotty when I need him? This looks like a must play course and more than once. It is a long way to Tasmania from New Orleans.

At a guess I'll say the photos of 15 and 17 are Scaletti's.  Great shots.

Tom,
From the photo it appears the 18th green is bunkerless.  If so does this apply to the fairway as well?   If time permits please a few words on the how and why of this and how it fits into the flow of the rest of the course (i.e any other bunkerless holes).

IMHO it is great to play a hole that remains a great challenge without the need for bunkers.  The thought that someone could have played this ground in this way before the designers/architects got there.

Not to make the rest of you envious (Okay maybe a little bit, I have to hear about all the American and Canadian courses I am not able to get to) but I hope to get down there soon.  I have heard big wraps from a source I trust for a true assessment.  Can't wait.

Thinking out loud... What kind of a group airfare rate could we get if we loaded up a jumbo jet with GCA participants that are going nuts trying to figure out a way to swing the cost of a trip down under.  We could rent the most fuel efficient one and hired us a golf goofy flight crew that would trade their services for free golf in Barnbougle paradise.

The Japanese were filling up jumbo jets some years ago to come to this country to play cheaper than they could if they stayed home.  How about us reversing that idea and see if we could get a tour group with costs somewhere comparable to a trip to Kiawah or some other US resort. Kind of a long shot, I know... :-\

Seeing these photos makes me believe the hype.  Hopefully I'll get down in the next couple of months - are those $49 Jetstar fares still running?

Dick,
I know a pilot who does the LA-Australia route. I'll ask.
I'll make the trip a discussion point at Banff. I'd pick January of 2006.

Chris - The pictures do look amazing don't they?

The Jetstar fees to Tasmania ex-melbourne are still under $100 return from what I know. The Spitit of Tasmania ferry from Melbourne-Devonport is $110 return peak season for students. Vehicle costs are cheap too.

Guys in the US -

We're no further from you than you are from us. We have as many accessibe courses of breath-taking standard as you do, and we are cheaper. I know the flight is long, but hey, Doak seems OK having made the trip once or twice  :) Please, can you stop whinging about the travel time?

Great looking pictures.  As a Pacific Dunes regular, Barbougle Dunes and Cape Kidnappers and at the very top of my travel list.  Hopefully I will make it down there soon.

The web site is being updated at the moment and will have some nice new pics . If I could only figure out the technology I would post a few recent ones I have taken that came out OK as well

Great pics: something else in the flesh! Forget the money, unchain your computers, and take the break. Greg "Young Turk" Ramsay will cast his welcoming Tasmanian spell, and you won't want to leave.

After you play Barnbougle, you'll reflect upon its many great holes, and the distinct lack of poor holes.

Coastal setting, awesome greens, routing, fun walk, challenging layout, affordable green fees, rustic charm = Barnbougle Dunes.

It isn't the time, it is the cash... ;)

If we were really purists, we'd hire on a freighter ship and do it like the Good Dr. and steam our way down under.  We could have the Good Dr. nostaglia cruise.  Drink their booze, shtoop their women, and never say a bad word about their courses... :P ;D

Peter:

I am hoping that you WILL NOT post pictures of holes 4, 5 and 6 here or elsewhere on the internet.  We've got to have something in reserve to reward the people who do make the trip, don't you think?   :)

Is there a date for opening day yet, or is it all still dependent on the progress of the first and second holes?

RJ and others:

I doubt that chartering a jumbo jet would be more cost-effective than the regular airfares.  LAX to Melbourne is about $1000 coach with advance purchase [I've seen it lower, and there are also "consolidator" tickets which are less].  Melbourne to Launceston r/t is less than $100 US.  And there are plenty of relatively inexpensive lodging options in Tasmania, best of all camping out with the marsupials!

I'm taking my whole crew in December 2004; certainly you guys can afford a ticket for yourselves!

Got any job openings? Maybe for a math geek who knows how to print t shirts? :)

My wife doesn't know it yet, but I'm going next year - and as often as possible after that. ;D

George, maybe you can get some suggestions from Tom Huckaby.  He seems to be the resident specialist on wife/golf management.

If it's only a 1000 clamskees, that's hardly more than a trip to Ireland from the US Western slope.  If no life disasters happen, I'm going.

I will defer to your greater marketing experience and hold back on releasing any photos , although the photos I thought to post will be on the new web site in the next few days anyway .We also have some nice pics of other holes which have not been seen yet , so there is plenty in reserve.
Friday 10 December is set as the official opening .
