14th & 18th at Pebble Beach
« on: March 11, 2004, 09:27:29 AM »
I was wondering if anyone had pictures of the new bunkering on the 14th and 18th holes at Pebble that they would be willing to share.

Jim- You may get a better response if you tell why you want them.

Since Pebbles own web site doesn't show the schematics of the new bunkers, It may be hard to get Pics.

What do you want to know?

JimH,

I assume you're talking about the new fairway bunkers on the left of 14 and the right of 18..??  I have a few pictures of 18, but they don't transfer very well and it's tough to see the bunkers.

The best I can tell you is #14 looks like the bunkers on the right-side of the fairway, and #18 added a second bunker (similar to the existing fairway bunker) that's directly behind where the two trees used to be....draw a line from the back tree through where the trees used to be.  The size, shape and depth is almost identical.  And you'd REALLY need to bomb it to hit it into one of those bunkers....290-310yds.

Brian- There's a new bunker on 14 on the right. It appears to be approx. 10 yards past the huge long bunker.

I've been lurking around here basically forever - it is one of my favorite sites.  I have a keen interest in course design and construction - though I'm not involved in either.  I'm actually a professor in biology at the Univ. of Tennessee, Knoxville.  Everytime I visit this site I learn something new about course architecture and for that I would like to thank all of the great minds around here.

My request for pictures stems from a hobby that I have.  While it may sound trite and uninteresting to some, I am involved with a small group of individuals that build golf courses for Microsoft Links 2003 using their APCD autocad program.  One of these courses is a recreation of Pebble Beach that can be played by all users of the program.  While we have incredibly detailed information re: layout, elevations, etc., some of our material is dated; i.e., it does not include the new bunkering on the 14th and 18th holes.  What I'm looking for is a few pics that will enable us to place these bunkers as accurately as possible with respect to position, shape, and contour.  I know a few of the members here play Pebble Beach on occasion and was hoping that someone would be generous enough to take a few pics next time they were out.  Rest assured, there is no money to be made on this project - it is just a hobby and the course, once completed, will be distributed for free and with the blessings of Microsoft (yeah Microsoft and free in the same sentence is an oxymoron of sorts).

In any event, thanks for reading through my rather long-winded response.

JimH -- I don't find your hobby trite or uninteresting at all. I just wish you were working on a Links 2003 version of Pine Valley or Cypress Point.

JimH,

Glad to see yet another erudite Tennessee man posting on this site.

How about a Links 2003 version of Holston Hills?

JimH- While I have no problem, you should know about the team of lawyers the company employs, that have nothing better to do than claim copyright infringements.

But since no one has picture I can remember the new bunker from this years telecast. It was approx. ten yards past the old long one and had a shaped that mimics the shape of the cove on #8.

Rick - Pine Valley is availabe (though I can't attest to its quality), and I believe someone else is working on Cypress Point.

Mike - seriously contemplating a Links version of Holston Hills.  I don't live very far from the course but I'm not a member - so access is an issue.  To do these courses well you need tons of pics and video footage.  High resolution topos are a must as well.  That is one of the reasons we would like pics of the new traps at Pebble.

Thanks for the info  :)

As for copyright infringements, this has been addressed numerous times over the years and basically boils down to whether a profit will be made by releasing a sim-version of the course.  No profit or sales - no problem (yet, anyway  :)).  I would like to point out that in most cases, designers contact the course that they are designing for Links and inform them of their intent as a matter of courtesy.

Jim:
On what site can one download the courses?  I have Links2003, but find myself using TW2004 b/c of the graphics.  For a good Pebble, that could change things a bit.

Steve,

Every user-made course that has been released, along with a ton of useful info, can be found at http://www.sportplanet.com/links/  (click on "courses" in the menu list on left side of page).  I should point out that some of the better designers in the community now charge $3 - $4 for their fictional courses (the majority of which are exceptional, not only with respect to their design elements, but eye-candy as well) - you will find a number of real courses available for free download however.

If you register (free) you can access all of the forums which is a good idea.  While there are versions of Pebble available, Chuck147 (Chuck's forum handle) is the primary individual responsible for the version of Pebble that I have mentioned here.

Oh yeah, an outstanding group of designers (including Mike Jones - one of whose courses was relased with the official version of L2K3 - and whose web site is located at http://www.mikejgolfdesign.com/?id=40&pid=21) is doing a long-anticipated version of Augusta.  Screen captures and progress reports can be found at http://www.mogulbasher.com/augusta/betaforum/index.php?pg=main

Wowza, I just checked out some of the above links!

Every time I get down on myself thinking that I am a big golf course junkie I just need to remind myself that there is some guy behind a computer RIGHT NOW making replica courses on his PC.

What a crazy world.

What does it matter if the poor player can putt all the way from tee to green, provided that he has to zigzag so frequently that he takes six or seven putts to reach it?     --Alistair Mackenzie--
