Golfweek article on NZ
« on: February 13, 2004, 10:18:46 AM »
Talks about Kauri Cliffs and Cape Kidnappers, among others.  Worth a read. Interesting that Mr. Robertson thinks he can market NZ as a sensible golf vacation destination for west coast US. Probably is as easy as going to UK.

Anybody down under know how one gets to CK from Auckland? I might be in that neck of the woods soon.

Jim, there are plenty of daily flights between Auckland and Napier, which is just a quick car ride from Cape Kidnappers.  You can view a good area map at http://www.hawkesbay.com/largemap/hawkes_bay

45 minute flight from Auckland to Napier, a quiet no-fuss airport. 30-45 minutes by car through the beautiful art-deco Napier (it was rebuilt after a quake during the period) and around the coastline to CK. You can do it as a day trip no worries.

Also home to one of NZ's great fuller bodied red wine regions. Hawkes Bay, and it's more specific microsite of Gimblett Gravels makes some awesome Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah.

What other courses were mentioned Jim?
Is the article online?

There was a picture in the most recent issue of GolfWeek (Vijay Singh on the cover) of several holes at Cape Kidnappers and it looked awesome. Maybe Tom Doak can identify the holes. It seems the land contains plenty of unique rolls and with the water nearby it does steal your breath.

Here is a new webcam, sited on Napier Hill, and looking out over Napier City, across Hawke Bay, with Cape Kidnappers in the distance...

http://www.hawkesbay.com/places/napier/webcam

Please note however that the cam runs 24/7 (updated each minute), and during the night all to be seen is a slice of the lights of Napier.

ps. Anybody care to contribute a short review of the Cape Kidnappers course that I may publish on my site http://www.hawkesbay.com/ ?  ;)

Murray, congratulations on a great website.  Although, it looks like the area of Napier and NZ in general make the task to promote interest all that much easier.  Do you know any nice families that would like to adopt a middle-aged Yank? ;D 8)
