Anything worth checking out between Amarillo, TX & OKC?
« on: February 12, 2024, 11:28:48 AM »
I have a new one for the group...  ;D

Might have to make the drive between Amarillo & OKC this Spring. Any chance there is a cool local Perry Maxwell somewhere along I-40 worth checking out since I'll be in the area?

If you wanted to divert about an hour south, you'd go through Childress, TX, which is about to be on the golf radar.

I don’t see anything without diverting a ways off I-40.

On the north side you could see Canadian Golf Course, which looks to have at least 3 holes in some pretty beautiful dunes. A little closer to OKC is Roman Nose state park. supposed to be on pretty wild land, but I think it’s a funky (not the good funky) routing. Boiling Springs is further north and I’ve heard good things. Golfers Journal might’ve done an event there.

South of I-40 is Lawton, like Ben said. Duncan is nearby, also a Maxwell.

I've been to Canadian, we looked at a potential project there years ago.  The existing course is nothing special.

Also been to Boiling Springs, which is an interesting piece of land, but I didn't think the golf course made great use of it.

I lived in Altus for two years and it’s one of the reasons I almost quit the game.  ;D   I kid I kid.

Lawton isn’t anywhere near on the way between AMA and OKC without a private aerial conveyance, in my opinion.

But seeing the land that Tom’s new course is on will surprise you. That dunes land fronting parts of the Red River is shockingly good.

Tom -

Have you built any holes there yet?

I'm surprised to see so many, what appears to be, dunes or highly rolling land on Google Earth along I-40.

I played a public course in Amarillo around 40 years ago.  I don't remember anything about the course but I do remember the price was friendly.

Yes, we started in November.  I will be there for a few days after Valentine’s Day and expect we will have somewhere between 9 and 12 holes ready for irrigation when I leave.

Roman Nose is a hoot and a half, super short, super quirky.

In Clinton, OK you've got Riverside, Tripp Davis, nothing special but it's golf.

The course in Elk City, OK was fun 20 years ago.

Course in Weatherford is ok.

Crimson Creek in El Reno has some quirk.

Shame they closed Sugar Creek Canyons in Hinton, that was a very good Mark Hayes design.

I can't offer you any quality, but I can offer you quantity. I took the liberty of spending the day cataloging all the courses between Amarillo and OKC.

The results can be seen here: https://golfcourse.wiki/?lat=35.23&long=-99.76&zoom=6

In going through all the courses, most of the courses were extremely small, and only had facebook pages and no actual websites. Some courses that looked interesting to me (again, just by researching them):

Perry Maxwell:
Jimmie Austin Golf Course (public), Lawton GC (front 9, private), OKC G&CC (private), Twin Hills G&CC (private).

Floyd Farley seems to be a prolific with five courses in OKC.

I agree with Sam and Blake that Roman Nose State Park GC looks like an interesting course from aerials and their photos.

Some sand green courses in case you ever wanted to play one: Cheyenne GC and Seiling GC

The Farley family is a very prominent family in Oklahoma golf. Oklahoma golf is pretty good in general but unfortunately the Corridor west along 40 is not the best.

Nobody has claimed this is an access thread! Out of irrelevant curiosity, why would one drive from Amarillo to Oklahoma City?

Dude,

You may never get to God's Country again.  You need to go 90 minutes south and I'll make sure you get some red carpet rolled out.  Let me know.

Jimmie Austin Golf Course (public), Lawton GC (front 9, private), OKC G&CC (private), Twin Hills G&CC (private).

Having gone through 2 major redesigns in the last 30 years, is no Perry Maxwell left at Jimmie Austin.

Ya not much Maxwell left at Jimmie Austin but it's still pretty solid.

No requests for access here!

Always amazed at the knowledge base on GCA.

Reason for the drive would be to do a real estate site visit. 50/50 if I go but I thought if I was going to make the trip if was worth checking if there was some cool obscure 9-holer that I hadn't heard about yet.

I played JUCO in the area and the main attractions in the area for the passer through are the amazing amount of people with lots of tattoos and the onion burger.  They claim they came up with the idea of tossing grilled onions on a burger.

Thank you for this. I'm just a golf nerd trying to sort things where I can. I've changed Maxwell's status to "past work"

Have played La Palmoa CC in NW Amarillo - nothing overly significant from an architecture perspective, however the ball does bounce and run on the brick hard, sandy soil for this sight.

Was a lot of fun in that regard -

I've driven through Amarillo twice, and I can assure you I won't pass through a third time without trying this...
