Jeff Silverman's Newest--"Bernard Darwin On Golf"
« on: April 14, 2003, 07:50:48 PM »
Just got my copy, and I have to say that I'm quite enamored with it. If you don't have this one for your library, then it's really incomplete!

Rich, this is one you SHOULD absolutely get. (From one Dar-head to another.)

Jeff has brought together a large array of lost and well known Darwin yarns and articles from American Golfer and beyond. It's something you might want to have at your bedside, if your into reading verses, albeit probably the finest on the Game.

The publisher is Lyon Books, and it is carried at all of the major bookstores. It's about $26.95.

Tommy, is there any mention of Darwin's own golfing exploits in the British Amateur?

The reason i ask is because he defeated a champion Tasmanian golfer Bruce Pearce in the quarterfinal in 1908 (or was it 1911) and i wonder if Darwin ever made reference to the match in any of his writings.  One of the British scribes hailed Pearce as the best left-handed golfer in the world at the time.  His brother Clyde was the first Australian born golfer to win the Aus Open and Aus Amateur.

If the book provides any contact details for Jeff Silverman, i'd be very interested in emailing him.

Greg,
I haven't come across anything about Darwin's particpation in the Amateur, buit the second I do, I'll let you know.

As far as contacting Jeff, I think once he sees this, he will more then likely email you. If he doesn't, I'll tell him here now, he isn't going to get his pencil!: (Personal joke!)

Jeff, Please be a chap and email Greg will you!

Greg-

I have a copy of Darwin's "Golf Between Two Wars" in which he does recount some of his exploits, but not the match with Pearce....then again 1910 or '11 does not fall between two wars (not a very helpful post, sorry - i guess it's getting late :-[ ).

Tommy-

Thanks for the tip...with a b'day coming in a few weeks, perhaps I've found the perfect gift to give myself ;) ... along with the new FJ's I just ordered, and the ....

Tommy, this week I became reacquainted with a gentleman in his 90s whom I hadn't spoken to since I was a kid - former Cambridge and NZ representative Ian Ewen.

I happened to have with me some notes, including a couple of pages out of "golf courses - design, construction and upkeep" I had photocopied to bring to our AGM 24 hours later and had printed off the title page of the book as well, to validate the others. When Mr Ewen saw Bernard Darwin's name under Colt, Alison, Simpson and the others, he began telling me how he used to play golf with him at courses around Cambridge 70 years ago, like it was nothing. He also knew Henry Longhurst and Alex Russell. Russell was in his late 50s when he came here to lay out Paraparaumu in '49, so Ewen hit drivers for him over a period of six weeks.
