Cotswolds Advice -OT
« on: July 07, 2022, 07:43:51 PM »
Old Minch, Painswick and Cleve Hill with a side trip to Kington. Got that. Taking the Mrs. to the Cotswolds in the spring.  Best towns, lodging, dining and drinking. Give me your faves, please.

Cheers.

There's a hotel immediately adjacent, like right next door, to the clubhouse and course at Minchinhampton Old.

You'll find nice hotels in Painswick village and it is a delightful place to stay.

Cheltenham is the big town at the bottom of Cleeve Hill and is very elegant.

Note dates for the Cheltenham Festival (mid-March) and plan accordingly. Whether to attend or avoid depends on your interest in  jump racing and huge crowds.

Consider a little more driving and include Church Stretton on your trip. Just outside of town, the Ragleth Inn is a good spot to eat. The golf course is another tough walk, but really begs a visit.

Painswick is definitely worth staying in. I didn't have too much time to look around there (typical over-scheduled trip) but liked what I saw. The Tibbiwell Lodge was fine for me, but with your wife along, maybe splurge on the Painswick? The Royal Oak pub has real ale and good food (or did 12!! years ago....).

A minor detour from Kington back towards Painswick/Cheltenham is Hay-on-Wye. If you like books, consider it.

If your Mrs isn't going to play or walk with you then Cheltenham may be a best bet at its a large and attractive town. If your wife wants something smaller Winchcombe is very nice as well. Whatever you decide, take some time to see Chipping Campden...one of England's most attractive towns. You can even stay there when playing Cleeve Hill, its about a 30 minute drive from the course. A few lovely hotels in town as well...Cotswold House is a good hotel with a small spa. Woolmarket House is a smart b&b.

Much appreciated gents.  I’m a bit of a trip planning savant and am familiar with your suggestions.  Will spend a couple of nights in Oxford as well.  Cheap golf will allow an upgrade in accommodations for my girl.  She’s a real corker who likes a good pint with pub fare over fine dining!

Cheers.
