New game format: Best of 7
« on: December 04, 2021, 12:43:55 PM »
Hi

I was thinking about new ways to play a round of golf and develop the

Best of 7 format:

Format:
The round is divided in 6 games of 3 holes in stroke play.
The lowest score over 3 holes wins 1 point, no points for a tie and no carryover.

The player who wins the most point wins the round.

In case of a tie in points, the lowest stroke play total for 18 (the 7th possible point) wins the round.
The 7th point is used ONLY in case of a tie in the first 6 game...  it's a tiebreaker. It cannot turn a 3-2 match in a 3-3 tie...

So you can't give up on a 3 hole game, since the total might count.

Interest:
You get a pressure situation in stroke play every 3 holes...trying to close out the point, protect your lead etc...

With handicap:
You divide the handicap over the 3 hole games.
Example: a 6 hdcp is playing a 12, the 12 hdcp gets a stroke over the 3 hole total, not considering the hole ratings...

What do you guys think?

We play similar. Switch partners and play select shot every three holes.

We play “Hot Ball”   There is a colored ball usually red. Alternate who hits the hot ball and keep that same order while the other three players are playing select shot. There is a hot ball score and a select shot score for each hole. We play this when we have multiple foursomes. I’ve found that any game you can play where you can put your partner in a bad position is hilarious. Higher handicappers have more fun.

Wow, I play that same game with a purple ball. It's call it Slurple.

I'll be the contrarian.

We got rid of a similar method in our local high school league: 3 holes match, 3 holes match, 3 holes match, 9 holes match.

Keeps the lesser player in the game (if that's the goal, you have your format.)

The only thing that would make it worse is if you played it at match play, and not medal play.

Medal play determines the better player.

However, if you are looking to mix things up, it's definitely a deviation from the norm.
