I have been watching old US Open footage on Youtube. I recently saw the 1988 playoff at TCC. It appeared that several bunkers back then had no lips whatsoever, and other than thick rough between the bunkers and the green, you would be able to putt out of some of them. Am I mistaken? Is the footage, the angles, or my eyes off?
I have not seen the 1999 Ryder Cup footage yet, but I imagine work was done between the two events? Will the bunkers be deep and penal for the US Open next year?
Watching the 1971 and 1981 US Opens, I noticed that Merion's bunkering looked really good. I saw one shallow bunker but other than that, they all looked really strong. Have Merion's bunkers always been of high quality?
I have played neither course nor been on the grounds and am interested to find out a little bit more about both. Thank you in advance.
