USGA GHIN AP Update - Now with GPS +
« on: August 04, 2021, 08:03:36 PM »
Just received an email suggesting I download the USGA’s updated GHIN Ap.

It has GPS Technology including:

Distance to Green
Approach Heat Maps
Putt Break Maps
Shot Tracking

All for free.

Someone used it Monday at Glen Mills. It seemed nifty.

Seems interesting, I downloaded the AP and will give it a test run some evening playing a few holes.  Most interested in the green maps.  Personally I like to keep it simple but I am curious about the accuracy of green surface details, especially when the AP is “at no cost to me”.

No cost to you. Ha. Every missed shot is entered into a data base for future reference. Excellence will be rewarded. Nobody wants a duffer in the bunker.

The green maps are not free. It also doesn’t show the depth and width of the greens for free.

That was my thought when I heard. Can't wait to sit in the fairway while guys whip our their reading glasses to read their putts...........

or record where their shots went etc. etc.
WTF is an approach heat map?
I really get aggravated when such nonsense comes up from someone who rarely hits the ball first before the ground and plays the entire round off the bottom groove or lower.

One of the hangovers from covid is the live scoring apps golf associations went to last summer, with EVERYONE required to live score for all three players in the group.
Not great for those of us who need reading glasses to see but play without glasses, and ONLY use them for phone.
To say nothing of the fact my members don't need to know in real time about my latest double.....

After spending 5 days at Pebble where the caddies insist on taking carts I’m all in for full robotics. Our caddie showed up with a walking stick in each hand making it perfectly clear he wasn’t carrying anything. Why not robot?

A group of 16 and not a single group had a walking caddie. After my crazy buddy tipped $400 ole double cane slept outside his door. The only relief is no caddie at all. Thank you GHIN. Thank you.

How inconsistent is it for an organization that just administered a massive rules shift to speed up the game to promote this distraction. Calling them out.
My friend has played the home course almost exclusively for 70 years. Since he has owned a shooter he shoots every shot- shots he has played tens if not hundreds of times. I am not buying that people who invest in acquiring and learning this technology will not overuse it while everyone watches on. Makes no sense

I would never put it past the Blue Blazers to pass on anything that would put extra dosh in their pockets.  They've proved this for decades now in not selecting venues for big tournies where they can't set up their merchandise tent city.

Where do I sign up for the official Melvyn Morrow Fan Club, instead?

HAYZUS CHRISTAY, can we weigh down this simple walking game with even more gadgetry and encumbrances and possibly make it even more laborious, cumbersome, and torpid?

seems like ultimately it'll be $40 a year, same price as golfshot gps pro. used GHIN version for 1 round while also still using golfshot gps which ive used for 7 years now. numbers were close enough but a couple of the hole maps the GHIN app had were outdated for the course i played in the form of a green expansion wasn't being picked up in the ghin app.

Where I play the sprinkler heads actually have a number to the center of the green and they give you a piece of paper with the pin location and green shape. It is really quick. I wonder if it will catch on?

GHIN has never been a profit center for the USGA.  It has always been priced to the Regional Associations to break even.  If it did make a profit, a rebate was given.

I’m sure the app was developed by a third party (because nobody at the USGA has the skills required to develop it) and I’m sure that most of the money, if not all of it is going to them, not the USGA.

They are using the Golf Logix platform.
