May have missed it, but haven't seen anyone say "cracks the longest drive ever (or in a long time for us older guys). Everyone digs the long ball, or at least, that sound and feel of a perfectly struck shot. It keeps us coming back at the most basic level. (And does it really have anything to do with architecture?)
I may have told this story before, but when I worked for Killian and Nugent, and the office was adjacent to Kemper Lakes, we had summer hours, where we could either come in an hour late, or leave an hour early, which gave us time to play 6-9 holes, but usually less than 9 or 18. I learned to focus on individual holes as a measure for success, and also, on individual shots that I knew well, i.e., carrying the corner on 4, hitting the narrow green on 6 in a cross wind, etc. For the summer, we kept a "ringer score" or the total of the best score we had on each hole. Surprisingly, my ringer still wasn't under par, having never birdied the 16th and a few others there to offset the few birdies I made.
