Golf Association of Philadelphia Architect's Series
« on: February 15, 2021, 09:38:06 AM »

This should be a wonderful event. Anyone else signing up?

From the GAP website: https://gapgolf.org/news/architect-series-2/

William Flynn is the 2021 honoree.
“There is a segment of golfers that appreciates classic golf course architecture. We wanted to cater to that crowd,” John Manos, GAP Director of Course Rating, said. “Philadelphia is arguably the best region in the world for golf course architecture, and we wanted to highlight this in a fun and exciting way.”
Below is a list of Flynn courses and dates.Lancaster Country Club (May 27)

 • Eagles Mere Country Club (June 17)
 • Philadelphia Country Club (July 21)
 • Huntingdon Valley Country Club (Aug. 23)
 • Rolling Green Golf Club (Sept. 13)
 • The GAP Architect Series includes lunch and golf. Wayne Morrison, one of the foremost experts on Flynn, will serve as a featured speaker during the Rolling Green event. Morrison is co-author of “The Nature Faker,” which chronicles Flynn’s contributions to golf architecture, course construction, agronomy and turf science.

Should be a terrific event with a great group of courses.  Played Eagles Mere last year....cool mountain course.

Jim,

Is this just for GAP members or is it opened to anyone?

Mike-I liked Eagles Mere as well but it doesn’t get a seat at the same table as the other Flynn courses offered.

If only The Lurker©️ were attending!

I was thinking that Eagle's Mere was included to show very early Flynn. Of the rest of his early stuff I've played there is not much Flynn left I believe. Harrisburg CC has only two holes that The Nature Faker identifies as pretty pure Flynn (2 and 6). Doylestown was only 9 Flynn originally and is now mainly a Gordon course as it sits now. Seems like Eagle's Mere might be fairly true to as built given the 100 years that have passed.

I wish I were still a local to enjoy the architect's series, but thankfully I remain a GAP member and will try to make it out for the last event and the Wayne Morrison lecture. I've never been to Eagle's Mere, but understand it's a very fine course.  The other courses included are pretty obvious choices and represent a fabulous collection of Flynn designs.

Future architects will apparently include Ross (!), George & Tom Fazio, and William & David Gordon.

As for The Lurker, I sure hope he attends.

For the sake of discussion what would be the five GAP courses should be included for Ross, Fazio(s) and Gordon(s)? Some possibilities...

Ross - Gulph Mills, LuLu, Aronimink, Union League - Torresdale, CC of York, Jeffersonville

Fazio(s) - Moselem Springs, Hershey CC -East, Chester Valley CC, Squires GC, Waynesboro, Downingtown CC, Hartefeld National, Galloway National, Pine Hill

Gordon(s) - Saucon CC - Grace or Weyhill, Indian Valley CC, Old York Road CC, Medford Village, Sunnybrook CC, Doylestown (Original 9 by Flynn but feels like a Gordon and could be an example of his re-works)

Wow, $100k+ commitment for Flynn in less than 10 hours. Maybe we are not as fringe and groovy as our internal mythos would leave us to believe.

I certainly hope Wayne can fend off the lascivious advances of the architectural groupies.
