The second hole at CC of Woodmore is a90 degree dogleg to the left. The only play is to hug the left side or you have a long second shot in. A tree on the corner died and it now gives the player the chance to cut the corner big time but if the tee shot is not hit well the player is blocked from the green. No one misses the tree.

What you are probably noticing is that on older courses, often the hole was designed before the tree was there, and the original strategy works better WITHOUT the tree.  In other cases, though, a hole is designed with the tree as an integral feature, and those are hard to replace.

What I have found is that there is usually tremendous pressure from the membership to "do something" to replace a key tree, instead of accepting it cannot really be replaced.  Putting a bunker 40 yards short of a green on the right is not going to replace the elm tree that used to be there.  In such cases the best solution would be to redesign the hole altogether, trying to use the features that are intact.

Yes, that is hole I listed under Not Good in my post. I think it is most difficult par 3 that I have played, and I played it when I was much younger and better (albeit never good).

Was fairway tree on the 18th at Pebble Beach an original hole design feature or was that planted later for strategic purposes? Also, given the length of today's pro tour players, does it even come into play anymore as it once did and how would removing it change the character of that hole for both tournament and daily fee play?

It certainly is in play for me and would remove some of the lore of the hole. With the correct wind it is also in play for many TOUR players.
