Yes indeed -
my congrats to Ran
For me, if he merely oversees the panel of esteemed and well-traveled golfers, it'll be just okay
But if he also gets to on occasion write an essay to illuminate and contextualize the ratings, it'll be really good
The only benefit about a modern world in which, I'm told, 'no one reads anymore' is that a writer with strong views can feel totally free to say exactly what he wants to say
Best

Yes!  Finally some confidence has been restored in the process.  Congrats to you Ran and we look forward to hearing more about whatever criteria you develop with the raters.

In the spirit of "frank commentary", I think this is a challenge for Golf Club Atlas as we know/knew it.

It will be a tricky dance for Ran to balance "love of the game/courses" (and no ad revenue on GCA.com) with the advertising dollars of the "former magazine" that is driven by ad revenues. This website has always leaned towards Golf Magazine's rankings, so Ran's position makes sense, but will GCA.com's 147 Custodians be able to defend the 6000 yard Cape Arundel against Titleist and such when there is literally NO ROOM to lengthen the course?

When Titelist advertising is paying for the travel to Ireland and Scotland, will they be open to quirky courses such as Dooks, or do they want to see the tour buses at Waterville?

Ran is now THE most important person in golf, since Augusta won't do it, in the ROLLBACK/BI-FURCATION conversation. In the "old days", GCA.com picked on those "Championship Courses". Right now, those Championship Courses are paying the bills over at GOLF.com and our Fearless Leader is ranking them.  :)

Mike - in the spirit of even more frank commentary:
Titleist will be thrilled, since the only dinosaurs still reading GOLF Magazine are the same ones who’ll play Cape Arundel with juiced golf balls and jacked-up irons. Given the age (and diminishing skills) of the average gca.commer reader, Ran will likely be encouraged to promote as many 6100 yard classics as his heart desires! :)

Peter,

Ran has been the "Benevolent Dictator" of GCA.com but this is similar to the management company coming into the Private Club and telling Members everything is going to stay the same. It is not reality and yes that is a cry out for Mike Young, our "Screw the Management Company" leader!!

There are lots of GCA.com metrics that are attractive to Golf.com that they want and need - especially the 3:43 average time that visitors spend here:

https://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/golfclubatlas.com

Over at golf.com, their visitors are only there for 2:31 average time, and their "Bounce Rate" (one page visits) is 74.5%:

https://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/golf.com

Ran, the writer/rater/list organizer, is much "stickier" than their current content.

When GeoffShackelford.com "partnered" with the magazines, the content changed away from architecture and the numbers are:

Ran is our buddy and it is his site. However, my view of the world was his "147 Custodians" was a poke in the eye to the "Golf Rater Establishment". Ran is now the Establishment, and it is MUCH harder to poke someone in the eye when you are sitting in their office having a coffee before the morning meeting. What ever happened to #148?

Hopefully we don't end up here:

Anyone else pleasantly surprised by what Golf magazine has become? Since Milstein bought this the content / design has improved tremendously. Lets hope it's sustainable.

I think they saw the work The Golfers Journal was putting out and decided to adjust their model. I agree the new issues are much better.
