Amateur Championship 2019
« on: June 24, 2019, 02:02:19 AM »
This has just finished at Portmarnock. Big crowds and won by an Irishman, James Sugrue.

On Sky Sports tomorrow night (Tuesday) at 10 PM or Wednesday afternoon (4 PM) for those in GB&I interested.

Thanks Ally.  I can get a NowTV pass for the month and see this, Irish, Scottish and The Open. mWill do me until the Masters next year.

Report I read said 3000 spectators for the final. Highest ever figure?

Thanks Ally for the tip about the Amateur on TV.

Another programme worth watching is this one -

Gerry Kelly, Links with the past, about the history of golf in Ireland, especially in the North. It’s on BBC iPlayer.

I played there last fall and they were doing some serious bunker work to get ready of the tournament. It is such a great course. It doesn't wow you with big dunes but the routing is brilliant and the course demands good shotmaking and a tee ball that finds the fairway. It really is one of the great clubs in the world.

Ally,

Thanks for flagging this. Just watched the highlights and was good to get a look at Portmarnock, the place looked stunning.

Slight change of format for the programme this year unfortunately as they’ve previously shown it over at least a couple of days which meant they included some (albeit limited) clips from the strokeplay section. Last year we got to see a bit of Murcar before the tournament focused on Royal Aberdeen and therefore we didn’t get to see The Island this time around.

Not sure if this has been covered before, but I didn’t realise the Amateur was ever held outside the UK and just assumed, like the Open, it had always been played on UK courses. After a little research I learned it has only been held outside the UK on two occasions - both at Portmarnock - in 1949 and again this year.

I was surprised to learn that the first time it was staged outside Britain was in 1960 at Portrush. I guess the Irish Amateur Open Championship (discontinued in 1959; revived in 1995 and format changed to strokeplay) was viewed as Ireland's version of the Amateur Championship, so there was little reason to stage the Amateur Championship in Ireland.

The Irish Amateur Open Championship was a very prestigious event with John Ball, Harold Hilton, Lionel Munn and Joe Carr listed as winners.

Donal,

It’s only been held outside Britain (depending on definition) twice, in 1949 and 2019, both times in Portmarnock.

The course looked wonderful. Although the coverage was brief it was great to see so many shots running from the fairway to the green. A links treat.
