According to a revered former member of the site there has been a death at the 8th.

I don't recall hearing anything about it and lived in the area during the late 90's.

Here is some verifiable documentation of an injury from the pro-am:

And a gutsy move from Furyk at the 6th that could have gone badly:

Members of our club lost a cart and their clubs over the cliff 15-20 years ago.  They escaped

SL- is this the same club where caddies are mandatory and carts discouraged?  Have they lived this down?

Mike- I was pretty close to the right edge (left foot on the downslope) the first time I played #8 and managed to hit the ball over the inlet, but not without considerable fear (you've seen my lateral slide).  35+ years later on my second and last visit, again with a 3-wood off the tee, I was well back from the edge, around two hundred yards from the hole and proceeded to hit two balls into the crevice with a hybrid before getting the third one near the green.

I think the stretch 8,9, 10 is as good as it gets.  BTW, on #6, after a good drive down the right side, I had a little over 200 to the green.  I hit a 3 wood squarely, and with great anticipation at the prospect of a rare eagle putt, I watched the ball struggle to clear the cliff and fall well short.  Watching the pros hit 4 and 5 irons over the chasm with no problem brought home the fact that they are good (and I am not).

Lou,  caddies are not mandatory but encouraged.  You are welcome as my guest anytime you re in the Chicago area.  I prefer to walk unless i am at a course where carts are required and hope to be able to do so for many years.

Thanks SL.  My mistake.  I'll be sure to contact you when the new Woods course opens up adjacent to the President Obama library.  I had hoped to play Chicago GC one more time, but my member contact there got the boot for trying to save a few bucks.  And I've lost contact with my friend Jeff Goldman, who had moved to KC, I think, the last time I heard from him.  So many places yet to visit, so little time!

As to walking, I am with you.  I have a friend at Dallas National- not an easy course to walk with numerous large elevation changes and long walks over and around escarpments- 83 years old who walks even during the summer and can often beat me.  I hope to be follow in his footsteps (though not at DN).  Pebble Beach is not a hard course to walk and riding would seem to diminish the experience, especially since most rounds already take well over four hours.  Losing a cart over steep ground is not all that uncommon, though if one had to do it, PBGL's #8 sans riders does make for a great story.

My wife and I were playing Pebble ~17 years ago and she hit her drive way to the right on 6. There was a guy looking for balls and actually over the cliff on the far side and my Wife had to hit it probably 20 yards left of him and he just waived her up. She of course hit one right at him and he was frozen as he was really on a precarious spot --ball went right into the cliff face feet from him and he nearly lost his balance. It was scary to watch.
