This has probably been discussed on here many times before,[/size]  but I am a combination of inept at the search function and also lazy, so in the interest of time here goes.  I am not a NYC and surrounding area expert so I am not even sure how to describe the area properly (Brooklyn? Queens? Western Long Island?).  And don't know really anything about traffic patterns, etc, so any comments are welcomed.I am flying in to Newark early this Monday am, and cannot really plan anything concrete golf wise for Monday at this point because I am leaving my schedule a little loose and flexible as I wait to hear back on a possible bucket list round for me.  So until I hear back on that, possibly at the very last minute, I am wanting to keep my options open and flexible.I need to meet a customer in Great Neck for dinner at about 7pm.Knowing those early day and late day parameters where all would you recommend I should consider trying to get out to play?  Anything architecturally significant that makes sense?  Might even just be thinking about 9 holes late morning that I could convert into 18 depending on what I hear about other developments regarding my afternoon schedule.I was glancing at golf now just to see a map of public courses that might be on that general route between Newark and Great Neck, and some names that sort of sounded familiar popped up.  Dyker Beach, Marine Park, The GC at Middle Bay.  Would love to hear peoples thoughts.

Bethpage Red or Eisenhower Red.  As a single, you will not have any problems fitting into a group.  Best hole of all at Bethpage is 13, and there are many great holes as well.  Eisenhower is a very good Devereux Emmet with quite few excellent holes

Played the Black 12 years ago, is the Red the same kind of walk terrain wise?   I need to look up Eisenhower as well to see where that is.

Also I was just looking at the map and I see Van Cortland Park (which I have heard people talk a lot about over the years) is not really too far out of the way on the direct route from Newark to Great Neck.  Didn't really think about that part of the city because I guess I was thinking about the general area between the two points on the map.  Not realizing that the shortest driving time might not have anything to do with the direct route.

I would get to Long Island first and then play golf due to traffic. Logistically to Great Neck, Harbor Links is the easiest and built on the Town Dump, it is interesting, but in a different kind of way - http://www.harborlinks.com

I have never played it, but Doak's Sand Point is the absolute easiest for your meeting. Town owned golf course, but they don't have public tee times - http://www.villageclub.org/golf

Bethpage Green would be your other option if you go that route.

If you have some desire to play IN NYC, 1) Pelham 2) Split Rock in the Bronx are pretty good and basically on your route from Newark to Great Neck. Both courses at the same location, and I have never played Van Cortland.

Anyone have any thoughts on Van Cortland?

I second Harbor Links.  You can play 18 on the main course or 9 if you prefer on the very nice Executive Course.  It's among the more expensive publics on Long Island but if you have to be in Great Neck that evening anyway it will be worth it for the convenience.
Van Cortlandt is up in the Bronx, very slow, and nightmarish if you have to travel to Great Neck in late-day traffic.
You could certainly try the "play along the way" strategy on the south shore or at Bethpage but it should be noted that both the Newark --> Brooklyn/LI and then post-round Brooklyn/South Shore --> Great Neck trips will be long and aggravating.  If it was me I'd head straight to Harbor Links and minimize the stress.

No real reason to post here, other than to point out that Daryl formerly had one of the coolest tagline thoughts I've seen on here:

(Paraphrasing) A day spent golf doesn't count against the rest of your life.

If Daryl tees it up with one of the NY contingent, please pay for him and send me a bill for the round (unless it's Pebble $500 level :)). That thought keeps me going.

Kind words George, thanks, it might be time to switch back to that tagline at the bottom.  "Time spent playing golf is not deducted from one's lifespan."  I still use it in several of my email signatures, and I have some cards with it on for when I travel and meet people playing golf.

I took it off in honor of a friend of mine who is a disabled veteran who had my current tagline on the bottom of one of his emails to me...

Thanks for reminding me...

Appreciate the offer, but not going to be into the area nearly early enough for that.  Thanks though...

Good stuff. I'm a fan of the  rough men line as well. In fact, there's an author, Brad Taylor, who used it as the inspiration for his first novel titled "One Rough Man". Taylor is a retired Delta guy, so he knows whereof he speaks.

Have fun!
