Machrihanish Golf Club is very well known on this site.
I think it was one of the earliest courses profiled by Ran, circa 2000 iirc.
It is one of the VERY oldest clubs to still play much of the
same terrain and
same holes
as were played before the dawn of the last century.
In some ways, it is the essence of the mysterious appeal of links golf.
As reported here and elsewhere, Machrihanish Golf Club recently suffered a devastating fire.
The entire clubhouse was destroyed.
Luckily, Club Stewards Ian and Agnes McClean, who lived there, escaped uninjured.
But the clubhouse is a total loss.
The Club has insurance enough to pay for a new clubhouse,
“BUT…….the insurance settlement does not allow for all the improvements
we would like to make in this unique opportunity.”
Not to mention the inevitable loss of normal revenues.
The Club has started a GoFundMe page to raise some cash to help improve the new clubhouse.
Despite its fame, Machrihanish is by no means a wealthy club.
When I joined 30 years ago, the turf was maintained by “three men and a boy”.
Their budget has not grown by much since.
Yet it has always offered a rich welcome to visitors.
I’d guess our site has about 200+ participants who have been there.
And always a great review.
If anybody here would like to contribute, here is the link.
All donations are greatly appreciated.
