OT- Your Buddy Up Experiences

Caddy day at Woodcrest in Cherry Hil ,NJ. 


Almost every Monday in the summer all the caddies played !  First organized golf game for us all and many ,many blood and guts matches.  Picked teams and off we went.  Golf was a third or fourth sport for most of us but we had some great fun chasing it on for the nicest course any of us could ever get on.   (Ages 13-17)


Some unbelievable shots good and bad and funny stories retold to this day 😎

Lots of fun ones...this is why golf is great!


Randomly paired with Marcus Allen at Angeles National about 10 years ago, he was an ok guy, left after 12 holes...we did not talk about OJ.


Randomly paired with a guy in RI one year at a new course who drank 6-8 beers from his bag through the round...was down at Disney playing Eagle Pines (RIP) about a month later, and he drives up to the first tee, sees me, and forces the starter to put us together!  Not a bad guy, but one round was probably plenty.


And my least fave...back to back rounds at Cascata and WeKoPa-Sag.  At Cascata I was paired with two jamokes from Toronto, who arrived like 2 mins before our time when I was already on the tee happy to play alone.  They had been up all night gambling and drinking, and trying to settle on which prostitute to bring home...all info they were happy to discuss with me, who they had met 2 minutes earlier...and both were married with young kids at home.  It was 5 hours of resisting their attempts to rope me into bets, forcing me to listen to their stories...and I was VERY glad I didn't bet, as one of them was a 14-capper (maybe) who shot 76!  Ugh.


The We-Ko-Pa round was great for the golf, and pleasant with a father and son down from Alaska.  Fun conversations about golf in Alaska abounded.  However, on the back nine, the father (maybe mid-70s) achieved his goal of turning the conversation to religion.  I thought it was just curiosity of my background, but no...they were Baptists, and wanted to convert me.  The last 5 holes were very silent after rebuffing his 7th or 8th attempt at convincing me I had to give myself to the lord by telling him that I had no interest, and I'm done talking about it...after putting out on 18 he turned to me to shake hands, and I bolted for the car without saying anything.

My favorite Buddy Up was probably 25 years ago at the Huntsville, Alabama muni.  Paired with three young men with modest games who would routinely compliment my game (I had some back then) with a long drawn out "gushah."  Found out they were chefs at the local Japanese steakhouse.

I got paired up with three nice Chinese guys a few years ago in Oakland. I was maybe a 12 handicap at the time, and had a decent round by my standards. They weren't particularly good golfers but they were decent company and they kept pace. I played up at the white tees with them, and the 18th was about a 280 yard par 4 from those tees. I hit a good one and drove the green to about 20 feet. One of the guys promptly asked me if I was a professional. Not quite, but xie xie!

I was an airline pilot and on an overnight in Edinburgh (I was based in New York - and live in Atlanta). I was on the first tee of Braid Hills, and a threesome is up on the forward tee.  They wave me to play through, but after I teed and was walking by, they said I could join them if I wanted or play on.  I chose to join them for camaraderie.  All three were playing with hickory clubs.  By the 8th hole, I asked if I could give it a try.  Played the 9th hole and made par.  The gentlemen who obviously had a arranged this whole match says, "Well, you parred your first hole with hickories, you might as well keep playing them". So, I played the rest of the round with hickories out of his bag.  When complete, he invited me into his clubhouse for a pint.  We exchanged numbers and email.  From that point on, almost every overnight, he and I would play another Scottish course with hickories. I went to his house on many occasions for dinner, some scotch and to talk about golf and the history of the game.  We have now met all over the world, played golf and all sorts of adventures.
