I heard that distance yesterday.

And to think in my game now (I'm 54 years old), if I hit my 3 iron real good it goes about 192...

Just played yesterday into a strong 20 MPH breeze and used 5 wood into a 196 par 3!  What is that a 9 club difference?

Was it a 28 degree, long shafted 9 iron maybe?

How did that work out when Jim Colton was trying to dunk a couple of years back?

I did that once.

Of course, I was at 9,000 feet above sea level and had a 30 mph wind behind me.

Interestingly...the guy that won hit 4 drives that I saw this week...with driver...and none of them carried 270 yards...

I've read it has something to do with shaft lean at impact.

The irons I was fit for today have a 44 degree pitching wedge and a 20.5 degree 4 iron. Couple that with lighter shafts that my body can handle there is 15 yard difference in my old 7 iron and my new. The fitter told me technology hasn't changed too much in the 7 years since you were fit, but your body has. They have reduced spin rates through the entire set. Whether we like it or not, if they can build a set where the club with a 4 on the bottom goes 200 yards for a double fused 58 year old whose not been playing well, what do you think the young fit strong pros are going to do with this. Sure it is out of control to our eyes, but I enjoy watching it on TV viewers and playing. It is what it is.

I just got fit for new irons and told the guy that I wanted them all 2* weak. I do not want a PW that is 44*. I don't care if I am on a par three and someone hits a 9 iron (40*) further than I hit my 9 iron. How many strokes did it take you to finish? That's the bottom line.

My point is that pitching wedge is really an old 8 iron and the 4 is a 2-3 so some of the pros distance is speed and technology and some is the name of the club. Some don't have as crazy lofts as other but are there any 52 degree pitching wedges left out there?

Let's be more specific.

Yes, it was a 192 yard shot hit with a 9 iron. But...

- 18th hole at Sawgrass played downwind with 12-14 mph of help
- hard, fast greens
- ball probably carried 175 (again, downwind) and released another 17 yards

Great distance management under the conditions.
WAS NOT a 192 yard 9 iron in benign conditions with all carry.

Big hit for sure no matter what.

More like a "British Open" downwind 192 yard 9 iron.
