The Prince course has re-opened
« on: July 27, 2018, 11:38:17 AM »
Just noticed this. I was in Kauai two months ago and no one seemed to know what was going on, but LINKS has this article. It is my favorite course on the islands. I know it isn't thought highly of here, but I loved the challenge and beauty. When I was there a sink hole had just opened on number 14. I am curious about what the re-opening means going forward.

That was a fascinating piece.  Letting non-golfers use the course has great appeal, as long as they can manage the traffic and generate enough revenue to maintain it.

Writing the cost basis down to nothing as part of the sale probably helps make the numbers work better on paper.  The golf business is amazing that way: the more spectacular the first owner's failure, the better it is for the second, or third.  But not for their neighbors who tried to build something that made $ense.

Makes me wonder what will happen the first time someone gets beaned!

I enjoyed my single play at the Prince for what it was, an almost fantasy-calendar golf course.

The highlight of my round was watching a bunch of wild chickens take apart a halfway house lunch as the couple who bought said lunch putted out on the hole behind us.  The house employee was sure to tell us to take our cartons to the green with us so the chickens wouldn't attack our lunch in the cart, but the couple behind us were Japanese or Korean and didn't speak English, so they must not have understood the warning...they went running and screaming at the cart, which ended up looking like human chicken bowling!
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....

I agree with you Tommy, I think the Prince course is the best in Hawaii.  For me personally, it is one of my all time favorite courses.  Kauai is my favorite place on the planet and the Prince course is a marvel you have to behold in person to believe.  While some find it too difficult or extreme, one of the things I love most about it is how difficult it would be to replica.  The uniqueness of each property and design a golf course has is some of the strongest appeal it can have and Prince sits on absolutely incredible property.  In general I think that Hawaii golf is underappreciated and I'm very happy to see Prince coming back.  As a side note, the Makai course next door is fantastic as well.  A 36 hole day on Kauai's north shore is pure pleasure in my book.
