Mike I think GAP / Platt  is about to raise the bar, nothing but good  things on the horizon for these kids.  Exciting times in a Philly.
We have a pool and a pond, the pond would be good for you.

The JWP scholarships were offered to any caddie which applied. The amout of money received was mainly dependent on the family's financial situation. The scholar only needed to maintain at least a "C" average and continue to work as a caddy while in school.

It seems that this would be a major change in the new partnership with Evans.
The scholarships would be much more competitive and not all applicants would receive money.

Am i getting this right????

While not dead on top of the latest developments, I can offer a few observations as a J. Wood Platt alum, West Virginia University, Class of'86.

For me, and hundreds of others, it WAS pivotal. Realize that under Evans, 75% of the caddies have NO shot at that scholarship. Though they claim otherwise, historically the stated criteria say the caddie applicant for the Evans must be in the top 25% of their class. Even if they lower the bar just a little - many kids are shut out!
I totally understand the value of a full, four year ride that Evans provides. There SHOULD be a high bar in competing for that level of college support. That said,  many of those top 25% kids could qualify for other scholarships and financial aid outside of the Evans avenue.

The JWP Scholarship is not quite as easy as apply and you get it. There is a review, interview and sustaining process as well. Given the fact it is a partial scholarship and more inclusive, the criteria are less restrictive. With all respect, some of these teenagers are coming from some pretty rugged  circumstances. What's the goal? Help only the highest achievers? I think not. Mr. Platt didn't either.

I am thankful for his take. I was a solid B student, but not in the top 25% of my class. There would have been no Evans for me.
Let me just add that NO other caddie was more dedicated to his club or members growing up in my caddie yard.
In fact, I was awarded the most aid that was allowed at the time, partly because the members really appreciated my efforts.
I also worked at the club three years out of high school before starting college.

That's why we need to be careful about touting what is the BEST model. There are a number of other caddie scholarships offered by other organizations operating at the state or regional level. They all vary a bit and each has strong points to consider.

In closing, I applaud the WGA and GAP for this collaboration. It's a start.

Cheers,

"I said in a talk at the Dunhill Tournament in St. Andrews a few years back that I thought any of the caddies I'd had that week would probably make a good golf course architect. We all want to ask golfers of all abilities to get more out of their games -caddies do that for a living." T.Doak

After an ambitious course renovation, Aronimink Golf Club is preparing to host the BMW Championship in September. At this penultimate event of the PGA Tour’s FedExCup playoffs, the top 70 players will compete for 30 spots at the season-ending Tour Championship in Atlanta. It will mark the first time since 1959 that this event, formerly known as the Western Open, will be contested in Pennsylvania.
Regarded as one of the premier golf courses in the country, the storied Newtown Square  club has a proven track record of hosting major golf events, most recently the AT&T National in 2010 and 2011. The legendary Donald Ross layout in will also be the site of two other golf tournaments: the 2020 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship and the 2027 men’s PGA Championship.

I wish Aronimink the best, however I do lament the loss of a great event over July 4th holiday each year for the city of Chicago.  It attracted good crowds, fields and their families while the Taste of Chicago was going on along the lakefront.  It has been over 10 years now that the Western Open has morphed into something beyond recognition, a version of itsefl that could have been created  separately.  I believe the WGA still does run this tournament and they are the distributor of charitable proceeds, which principally was the Chick Evans Scholarship for caddies.  That should continue, however the city lost a prime spot on the calendar and they don't even get the tourney every year.  Trying to compete against football in September and just after Labor Day hasn't been as climatic as the PGA Tour envisioned, but as long as a sponsor is willing to put down millions they will call the FedEx Cup playoffs an "exciting culmination of competition from the game's best golfers".

Coming to Medinah in 2019, although wished the Western would have continued on, and this tourney would have had its own genesis, not having the Western be re purposed.

I didn’t think the PGA had selected any sites beyond 2023?

Was this a renovation or restoration?

Sometimes renovation and restoration are mistakenly used interchangeably; however, the article clearly states this  was a restoration to the 1928 version of Amink using aerial photography:

Aronimink didn’t need a restoration project to attract the world’s best golfers—but it’s surely helped. “The course will be much different from what the players saw in 2010 and 2011—more as it was when it first opened in 1928, as Ross intended it,” says Jeff Kiddie, Aronimink’s head golf professional. “For the spectators, the field will be stronger than what played in the 2010 and 2011 AT&T National. We had good fields and great champions for those events, but this field is one of the strongest of the year.”
The challenge of Aronimink’s renovation fell on the competent shoulders of Malvern-based golf course architect Gil Hanse, who’s become the new Rees Jones, the go-to guy for course restoration in advance of a major event. Hanse’s projects around the world—from the Olympic course in Rio to Los Angeles Country Club to Trump National Doral in Florida—make him one of the hardest-working men on turf.Fortunately for Hanse and his crew, two things were in their favor for this project: The course had never been dramatically altered, making restoration possible, and some good aerial photos were taken around 1929. “We really studied the aerial photographs that the club had in their records,” Hanse says. “There’s an amazing resource called the Dallin collection, and there are aerial photographs of nearly every golf course in the Philadelphia region from the late 1920s and 1930s.”l as-built design,” he says. All said and doHanse zoomed in on these photos to try and determine scale, depth, location, etc. “With the help of our talented associate, Jaeger Kovich, and superintendent John Gosselin, we were able to get them as close as possible to our understanding of the originane, Hanse and his team were able to roll back years of modifications and natural decline, with the time machine landing in late 1928. The beauty is that the restoration elements look less like changes and more like design aspects that have always been there, waiting to be reborn. “What players and spectators will notice the most will be in the bunkering,” says Hanse. “But there are many new tees—both back and front—and the tees have also been reshaped to be more in keeping with the original free-form shapes of the tees. The greens have also been enlarged to reclaim lost area and lost hole locations.”

Wait a second, did they just call Gil the new Rees Jones?  Oh my Lordy....

What if anything did Rees faithfully restore?  I may be wrong here, but the bayside butcher may be a better adjective...

Well I got to tour and rate if a few weeks ago. It's flat out beautiful. Sod was still being put down and we get to play on June 15th. Once it greens up it should be pretty.

11th hole is a flat out killer.
We have a pool and a pond, the pond would be good for you.
