So, as if the sensory overload from Royal Melbourne hadn’t been nearly enough, the very next day we had to endure the exquisite delight of ‘the Heath’.
Like RM, KH starts with a gentle handshake: a generous fairway to a large green. I made a good up-and-down from the left side for an opening par.

Followed swiftly by a devilish, gorgeous little par3. What wonderful use of negative space! KH is definitely more natural(?) than RM, although I haven’t got a clue what I mean by that. Hopefully, you’ll catch on!

Marty - of all the Melbourne courses I played KH was my favorite. As you say, it is so “natural.” And, pleasurable. And, a fabulous walk. And, an amazing club!


Hope I can visit again some day.

Is that the new bye hole? I knew it was recently made over. Looks like it's been there for decades.

That 2nd hole is the 19th - the bye hole.Mike Cocking redid it for OCCM last year. They play it in tournaments because it makes a two tee start work a little better but the little 10th is the 'real' hole.
I'm not so sure the 1st is a 'gentle handshake' to begin! It's 490 yards off the back tee up against the clubhouse. It was a par five until the late 60s - as was the 17th - but a 4 now.

I've never been to Australia, but based on pics alone, I think I prefer Kingston.

So, Royal Melbourne closely followed by Kingston Heath.
Two dream days bookending a perfect architectural study trip. (Well, more of a Shiraz-study Trip bookended by golf!) Just perfect.

I loved Kingston Heath!! Maybe it was the local members that made it even more enjoyable.
The Australian clubs have groomed their bunkers and I found that you really have to have refined bunker skills to play many of those courses well. Happily, I avoided Kingston Heath's bunkers most of the time.
A real delight!!
