What is great about his hole is there was nothing there...totally manufacturedfrom flat land.  I wonder if at one time it was easier to bounce a shot off the wall?  There is a bunker placed perfectly to guard against this play, but I do wonder...

The hole isn't a looker, but it is visually intruiging...best to get a good look when playing out.

I nominate the 11th hole at Askernish on the Isle of South Uist  in the Western Isles. The hole features a huge carry over a deep ravine to a green perched on the edge of the seaside dune with the Isle of Barra as background. It is stunningly beautiful and equally difficult.

It's the worst hole on an excellent course.  In a strong headwind it's unplayable.  On at least one occasion when I was there I walked straight from 10 green to 12 tee, knowing that the only possible result at 11 was a lost ball.  There's no bail out, it's a 200 yard carry or bust.  In a very strong headwind the vast majority of golfers don't have that shot.

You're not wrong there Thomas - it's a tricky little one and nowhere to miss it either. Certainly a lot more difficult in the summer when the green is dry and firm than it is right now though!

I've never been but hope to rectify that some time this year. However your comment begs the question; how did they play it in the old days when 200 yards carry even on a calm day wasn't possible by even the best ? I'm assuming of course that what they recreated was an accurate reflection of what Old Tom designed.

It's not, nor has it ever been claimed as such; the only evidence of the old course we had was a very rough plan of the estate from when it was crofted. The eleventh is a Gordon Irvine hole.

As I recall the first 7 holes and the last 2 holes on the Silverburn are generally pretty cool, some nice features, and despite the on-the-card short length not at all easy especially when the ground is burnt out and bouncy and/or the wind's up. The holes out the back (ie 8-16), less so.


If a leading clubs has a second course it's usually worth playing...St Olaf at CB, Annesley at RCD, etc.

Again, I would echo your sentiments. 1-7 (arguably 8) 17 & 18 are great fun holes on Silverburn. I actually like four of the par 3s on 8-16 too (of which there are 5 in total) and you'd be surprised at the amount of play the course gets, great for the short game and I play it a lot - in fact I see a fringe European Tour / Challenge tour player (who is a member) on Silverburn more than I see him playing on Balgownie. - But we seem to be getting a little OT. ;)

One that has not been mentioned yet (I think) is the great 3rd at Pitreavie.  Designed by MacKenzie with a c. 200 carry over a burn to a two tiered green tucked in the woods.  4 is a good score.

There have been quite a few posts on here about par threes.  I am curious what people here think makes a par three "great"?  Is it the beauty, the difficulty, the simplicity, the ???  Why is The Postage Stamp for example so great?  Because a bunch of raters say it is?  It is just a short little hole with a table top size green surrounded by trouble?  Why is that so great  ;)
