And I'm pretty sure the 1975 hosting was an expedient response to the Troubles in Northern Ireland, and anxieties about possible attacks at Royal County Down, I think the originally-scheduled host. The Old Course had of course hosted the memorable (and rare) GB&I win in 1971, and since then the British venues will have been

1979 Muirfield
1983 Hoylake
1987 Sunningdale
1991 Portmarnock
1995 Porthcawl
1999 Nairn
2003 Ganton
2007 Royal County Down
2011 Royal Aberdeen
2015 Lytham
2019 Hoylake

which is an impressive listing.

Interestingly this year the (British) Amateur is going to Royal Aberdeen for the first time ever: this will be the third 'new' northern Scotland venue for the championship since 1985, and its one and only playing at Dornoch (Nairn in 1994 was the other). Rather more controversially, in 2019 the  Championship is returning to Portmarnock, for the first time since 1949 (when it was won by the Ulsterman Sam McCready), although this will be the last R&A event to be held there unless and until the male-only membership policy at Portmarnock changes.

The US List is also rather impressive. With the likes of LACC, NGLA, Merion, Chicago, and Quaker Ridge over the last 20 years.

It makes me think, when comparing the Walker Cup venues to the Ryder Cup venues, that when it comes to the quality and prestige of the golf courses that the Walker Cup being a less financially notable event is working in their favor.

Exciting David

The WC is the best ticket value in all sport IMHO
"Golf is happiness. It's intoxication w/o the hangover; stimulation w/o the pills. It's price is high yet its rewards are richer. Some say its a boys pastime but it builds men. It cleanses the mind/rejuvenates the body. It is these things and many more for those of us who truly love it." M.Norman

Not interested in the slightest. So many other courses, even ones on the same plot of land, that should host a championship. This reeks of "We don't have any inspiration, so we'll keep going to the well."

This is a criticism not of a golf course, but of yet another failed attempt to perpetuate the game through championship attendance.

I'm sure the players selected to play in the event won't see i that way. I'm sure they'll be delighted to have the Old course to themselves for a week, what a great experience for them to play the event at the home of golf in front of what will probably be a very good crowd.

Spot on Colin.

It is a special experience for any golfing buff to play TOC and in a big event it must be even better.

I don't care what someone supposes the players will think or feel. Of course they will be thrilled to be there. You're sidestepping my point with your commentary, which is your prerogative. My point is that the RandA goes to the same well too often, and what we will see at TOC will be no different from what we've seen on many other occasions. Have some stones and play it on the New, or the Jubilee. Play it at Dornoch or other legendary course, rather than drawing inevitable comparisons to this Open, or that Women's Open, or even that other Dunhill Links championship.

Ronald,

though you may have a very good point it is also clear that any event played at TOC gets more publicity than anywhere else. I suspect this also plays into the mix.
