RIP Mike Vegis
« on: May 10, 2017, 01:07:37 PM »
I never know what the etiquette is on this topic, but Mike was truly a friend to many of us on this site. I really enjoyed with the round I shared with him 14 years ago this summer, and always wished I could make it back down there soon.

RIP Mike, hope they have the nicest, cleanest Titleist blades in heaven.

Do you know any details or where we might find an obituary?

Holy smokes...that is terrible news. I was planning on reaching out to Mike soon as we are planning on being down in Kiawah later this month. Since we spend most of our vacations there I had gotten to know Mike and he was one of the nicest guys I had met through golf.

My condolences to his family.

John, I was kicked in the gut with this news this morning. I was up getting breakfast ready, saw I had some FB notifications, so I clicked on the app. Before I could even check the notifications, I saw this posted:

It is with deep sadness that the Vegis Family announces the passing of Michael Vegis this evening in Charleston, South Carolina. Sabrina was with Mike when he passed away peacefully after a valiant battle against cancer. He fought it to the very end, as any Spartan would.
Mike celebrated his 60th birthday with all of his family on April 1st in Charleston. It was a great, fun celebration of his 60 incredible years.
Arrangements are being made and will be announced within the next few days.

------

I've read Mike's posts in recent months about his terrific family, and had no idea he was ill. I will update when I learn more.

Doing the math, when I teed it up with Mike, he was just 47. I picture him as the picture of health, strong and vibrant. It's hard for me to believe this.

I know those who are seriously ill don't like to share their pain, but sometimes I wish they would, if only so the rest of us could reach out. It's a reminder to me that I need to reach out, regardless of someone's circumstances.

Be well, all.

I think I prefer the Schrödinger's cat theory on death and disease with people who played an important role in our lives but may no longer be in touch in our real worlds. My life was better an hour ago when Mike was still alive and loving Kiawah Island every time my mind wondered down that way.

Sad news. RIP, Mike.
George, saw this on FB also this morning but wasn't sure what to do with it. That's a great photo of Mike in the announcement!

I met Mike briefly when visiting Kiawah.  He was a terrific representative for the property, seemed to be a great guy and provided valuable contributions here.

Rest in Peace!

My sincere apologies for bringing you down. As I said, I don't honestly know how to handle these situations.

What I do know is I don't like finding things like this out much later and feeling/looking like the idiot that I am. I don't post a lot these days and sometimes wonder what I've missed, and I didn't want anyone to feel similarly in a few weeks/months.

Be well.

I met Mike in real life, it's the people who live in our little boxes that never die. Just another reason to skip the harsh realities of Facebook.

Very sad to hear.  Played a round with Mike at Turtle Point on Kiawah some years back and we had to play 17 and 18 with Mr. Pete Dye walking along with our group and somehow we managed to look a little like golfers.

He mentioned during the round that he was a cancer survivor so it seems he battled that dread disease much of his adult life.

Godspeed, Mike.

I too was shocked this morning when I heard the news.  Mike and I had communicated (offline) over the years, and 10 years ago (wow, has it really been that long?!?!?) he hosted me and my wife during a wonderful round on the Ocean Course.

So sad when folks so young are taken from us.  Cancer sucks...  :'(

Mike was one of my first friends on Facebook.  He enjoyed the political field and leaned pretty hard right. Some of his posts were quite entertaining.

He shared tremendous enthusiasm for the Ocean course. For those who have been on this site for a long time he delivered insight on the construction and then daily comments during the PGA.

60 years old is just not right.

I spoke to him about a month ago and we were trying to hook up for lunch during my quick visit to Kiawah. Unfortunately it didn't happen. I am bummed that we didn't try harder. Kiawah lost a great ambassador. RIP Mike.

I had many IMs with him several years ago.  He was always inviting to come see him.  One time I was visiting down there, and talked about it on GCA.com, and Mike wrote me that he was disappointed I wasn't able to get around to looking him up.  Sorry the opportunity to meet another longtime stalwart of GCA.com., wasn't completed.  RIP

The obituary posted on there is quite entertaining, I'd imagine Mike had a hand in writing it.

Obituary for Michael Vegis

Michael Vegis, 60, of Charleston, and husband of Sabrina Vegis, passed away on Tuesday, May 9, 2017.He was born on April 1, 1957 in Dallas, Texas to the late Albert and Alberta (Karp) Vegis. Mike and his mom shared an April Fool’s Day birthday. He was a proud graduate of Michigan State University and like his father, was also a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity.
After cramming a 4-year degree into 6 years at Michigan State University, Mike decided that a normal career path wasn’t for him. He went to Washington and got a job on Capitol Hill, spending 5 years as Legislative Assistant to former Congressman Mike Oxley (R-OH), then 5 years as Legislative Director to former Congressman Don Ritter (R-PA). He worked mostly on Energy and Commerce Committee affairs, specifically on the Subcommittee on Telecommunications and Finance. Mike was also a campaign strategist to two of Ritter’s reelection campaigns.
Ten years is a long time on Capitol Hill and Mike had no desire to run for office, although the NRCC wanted him to do so in Michigan against former congressman Howard Wolpe (D-MI). He wanted to have some fun and get paid for it so he headed to Miami and got a job as Director of Marketing and PR for Windjammer Barefoot Cruises. For the next 8 years Mike sailed the Caribbean on Tall Ships while schmoozing with the press. He met Sabrina while “fishing off the company dock”, as she was a Windjammer passenger. He met her on St. Lucia and got to know her on St. Kitts and St. Barts. During his time with Windjammer, Mike took his 2 week vacations in Monterey working on the AT&T Pro-Am. He worked contestant registration, hospitality, photography, even bag transportation – you name it, he did it.Windjammer was fun but didn’t pay very well. Sabrina (before they were married) worked in Charleston and loved it. Mike used to vacation on Kiawah back in the early 80s and loved it.
They wanted to move to the Lowcountry to raise their family. They have 2 great kids; one boy and one girl. Christopher was born in 1999 and Tanner was born in 2000. So, to raise them in the best city in America, he begged his way into the best job in the world at the most well run, well thought out resort in America, Kiawah Island Golf ResortIn addition to Sabrina, survivors include his son, Christopher Michael Vegis, his daughter, Tanner Elizabeth Vegis, his sister, Victoria Vegis, and his niece Catherine Alexandra Vegis .
The family will receive friends on May 12, 2017 from 5:00PM - 7:00PM at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, James Island Chapel.A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday, May 13, 2017 at 11:00AM at Church of the Nativity, 1061 Folly Rd, Charleston, South Carolina, 29412. The Rite of Committal will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, James Island, South Carolina.

Mike once hosted my 15-year old son Alex and me at The Ocean Course. Mike was just wonderful, and he assigned to my son one of their biggest and best caddies (who absolutely dwarfed what was at the time a very thin and not very tall teenager). The caddy treated Alex like royalty, really made him feel special. That was ten years ago and something neither Alex nor I will ever forget. After we played, Mike, my wife, two sons and I had a delightful lunch and got to learn all about his family and great life in Kiawah. We so appreciated Mike, and it's so sad to learn of his passing.
