Correction: it is _thirty-four_ years since Captain Hanmer retired. That is basically 25 per cent of Muirfield's entire history....
Wow, is that right? I spent an hour with him on my first visit there in 1982, I didn't remember he had retired by the time I went back again.
He seemed to enjoy that people were afraid of him, but he wasn't so bad. He said he was being nice to me because his dog seemed to like me. He showed me a clutter of books and other gifts on his desk, all sent by visitors attempting to curry favor, and asked if I wanted any of it. I've known worse people in the golf business, that's for sure.
