Embo-lieveable!
« on: May 21, 2010, 01:08:08 PM »
Driving back from Golspie to Dornoch on Monday, Robin Hiseman took me to see a piece of linksland that he said he used to go and check out when he was building his holes on the Struie course.

Overlooking it, my imagination ran wild, so I thought I might share a pic. I haven't shrunk it to 800 x 600 so it will show up the wonderful land in its best light.

At the bottom of this post is an attached pic showing the point and perspective from which the pics were taken. Here is a link to the area on GoogleMaps: http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&q=embo&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wl

Scott,

How much land is there.  I scrolled the Google map and got the idea that there's more land there than comprises Royal Dornoch.
Some days you play golf, some days you find things.

How far from Dornoch is it?   It looks incredible.  What is the closest city?

The huge ridge on the right - reminds me of the fairway bunker in front of you on the 1st at Hunstanton (which is the mirror image version of this)

Could this be the next GCA Development course after Cabot Links?

Steve - I measure it as about 340-350 acres on the stretch of land shaped like a reverse "P" that runs up towards Littleferry.

Shane - My pic was taken less than a mile north of Royal Dornoch's 8th green. Nearest city is Inverness, less than 1hr south.

Scott -

I actually heard from someone I played golf with at Golspie last week that Donald Trump took a good look at the links land in the Embo area before deciding on the property north of Aberdeen. I have no idea if that is true.

I don't know if you took a good look at the land to the left of the 7th tee at Golspie (where the caravan park & cart racing track are), but that coastal linksland extends a mile or two down towards Loch Fleet and Embo.

Loch Fleet (the open water to the north of Embo) is a wildlife sanctuary and development near there would be very difficult.

Scott,

Here is my 1st attempt at Embo Golf Course!

Hole 1 - is a rolling risk reward par five
Hole 2 - is a short par 3 throught the dunes - the Arble two tee method is used giving different angles
Hole 3 - Punchbowl/Alps style medium par 4
Hole 4 - long dogleg left par 4

18th - in foreground!

If one assumes no problems caused by environmental laws, business risks or zoning restrictions . . . .

I would be interested in hearing from architects the potential issues they would need to review before confirming that this is as good a site as it first appears.

If there are no problems caused by environmental laws, business risks or zoning restrictions, I'm not sure you have to ask!

Scott,

I drove down the Skelbo road to Embo, but the caravan park put me off so I just drove away again. That's a pretty awesome landscape I missed there!

James

I went and had a look see after we played Brora. Yes it does look as though it would have great potential. One thing that might put off a Mark Parsinen is that I doubt that you would see any water unlerss from a tee or green located on a primary ridge system. Apparently that was one of the reasons why Parsinen passed on the Donald Trump land.

"Caravan Park? Thank clinches it!"

Embo is home to not just any caravan park, it is home to Grannie's Heilan' Hame, likely the largest caravan park in the Highlands.

I saw on Twitter today that Bill Coore is scoping out a site near Dornoch.

Is this it?
