Whoa...That's A New Discussion Board Look...Thanks, Ran

I really hope this upgrade gets it done. You and the site deserve it.

EDIT 1:  By the way, amigos, the message goes at the top and the thread title goes above "Standard" next to the first :

EDIT 2:  I can't figure out how to get back to the rest of the site from the DB, however. Is there a button?

I must be missing something because I'm not seeing any changes  ???

I don't really pay attention to the smaller details though.

It changed back already. It was real and it was spectacular...then it was gone.

Ronald,

I prefer the current look much better.  The other one reminded me of a gajillion car and tech forums I've been too.

It must be hard to create something readable with limited buttons, icons and other distractions. Not sure why, but it must be hard, because hardly anybody's done it.

Was it easier to put up photos on the "world's shortest" temporary version? If so, I would encourage its use because the current format's biggest deficiency, the non-intuitive and cumbersome image insert function, limits the site, IMHO. Where else does one have to jump through so many elevated hoops to paste a pic?

It really should strive to be "copy - paste" or have an "insert photo" link like pretty much everywhere else. If that became possible, I suspect participants would be more likely to post pics to use for discussion purposes. And I don't mean, "look at this pretty hole" pics but photos highlighting interesting design concepts, diagrams, etc.

I agree with John Connolly about the ease of posting photos direct from your device rather than the hoop of jumping to a host site and transferring a code, perhaps like Facebook does it.  Otherwise, I never had any problem with the current site organization and design scheme.
No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

The whole photo/image conundrum comes down to storage versus remote access. To store all of those images would cost Ran a costly amount of server space; the current system (my logical suspicion, not proven) has the server call for the image when it needs it, but not store it on the GCA server space. Text is light, images and video are heavy.

Ronald,

Its not even as bad as that.  When you launch your browser, and navigate to this page, all the GCA server is doing is sending the raw source code for the page to your local browser to interpret and render.  Sure there are graphics and banners that come from the GCA server, but they are very small in size typically.  Other than that its just raw text (likely compressed) which costs almost nothing in storage and bandwidth.

For videos or pictures that people post, (linked to other sites like photobucket), it is your local machine/browser going and grabbing it, the GCA server does nothing here.

So the main cost of this site is the hosting services, URL, Domain name, etc....not the actual grabbing of the information.
