Mark - Very interesting to see the 1947 RSG picture. You can see many of the features that got changed, just making out the old blind 3rd, also the 8th was a short hole then from the top of the hill to the same green as today, The long 11th (380) is there as well with cross bunkers (that's something I did not know) Alf Padgham drove this in Whitcombes open and holed the putt for a two.. Princes next door looks as if it was in that abandoned state, this was just two years after the war of course. RSG would host the Amateur championship in 1948 and the Open championship the following year. Maybe different bunkering on the long 7th too.
A combination of whats good for golf and good for turf.

The Royal St Georges overhead photo shows how much space they have on their property. Some other clubs would have another course on the remaining land, even a 9-holer if an 18-holer wouldn't fit.

For some reason, BfromA decided to highlight a pair of golf course photos of Oxhey Hall GC on the home page today. I thought they were extraordinary given that they were taken in 1928. As Mark pointed out, the course no longer exists but does anyone know its origins? If it was a local effort, it seems very clever. I added a zoomed view of the 18th green which shows the gigantic green half mowed.

Craig,

I don't know whether Oxhey Hall was the same as Oxhey GC. But Oxhey GC was a near neighbour of Sandy Lodge near Watford. It was forcibly closed just after the Second World War and turned into a housing estate.

Here is an extract from my notes concerning the Sandy Lodge Centenary. James Francis Markes was the autocratic founder, chairman and 'everything' at Sandy Lodge:

There was a further need for the club to increase its membership after the war. An opportunity soon presented itself when it was announced that Oxhey Golf Club was to be closed down on October 31st, 1946. Their land was requisitioned to become a housing estate. There was a friendship between Sandy Lodge and Oxhey, but when the Oxhey captain RE Seaton called on Markes telling him of the decision to close, Markes displayed his superior manner. Seaton explained that he could personally recommend members who might be suitable to apply for membership. He asked whether the Sandy Lodge committee might be prepared to elect en bloc 20 to 25 of them. Markes said that this was unlikely as every application to Sandy Lodge had always been considered individually. In practice Markes always interviewed prospective members himself. An opportunity was therefore lost to obtain a substantial number of new members quickly. Seaton understood this and requested that his name should nevertheless go forward to the committee as a candidate. As a co-liquidator of Oxhey Golf Club Seaton approached Sandy Lodge offering a cup and some autographed photographs of Open and Amateur Champions. The cup would be presented on the condition that it be called the Oxhey Cup but it was left to the committee to decide for what it should be played annually. It was decided that the cup should be played for in the autumn meeting.
