thoughts on lost farm
« on: September 07, 2015, 06:18:51 AM »
sitting back reflecting on what is now my 5th visit to the BD/LF I'm just thinking the lost farm continues to grow on me. on my initial visit I thought there was a clear superiority of BD, and whilst I still feel that it is the better of the two, the lost farm certainly has more of a subtle quality compared to the  in your face Wow moments of the dunes.

the first typifies this feeling. I now see that the hole is excellent. particularly the need to position  your drive to the left to allow any sort of shot at the pin and the second shot on what today played as a par 4.5 is crucial to success.

the second I initially thought was bland but I now appreciate that particularly to a left pin, position off the tee on the left side makes such an easier approach.

the third... is it a better risk and reward hole than than the 4th at BD? I for one have never really gone for the green at BD as it has been a bit long and just looks too risky. the third at lost farm appears much shorter and reachable. although I felt like a fool when I pulled out driver and put it into the bushes right. it's far too narrow to go for it but I feel it sucks you in very easily.

for me the 9th is the only so so hole on the front 9. It's an excellent mix of holes. the weakness remains 9/12 for me and that's why I still rate it below BD.. but it's a very close run thing

I felt on the 18, a great downhill finisher  This is certainly where bill coore and Donald trump differ! not quite the minefield I had to deal with in Aberdeen.

I have only played LF and BD once but now tell people that LF is my world favorite even after playing many fine US and UK courses.  It probably helps that I did drive the 3rd and then 3 putted for par.  I love the subtlety and wide fairways.  Even holes like 8, which have no ocean view are just spectacular.

Alan,

Not quite sure it is a risk -reward thing, but I prefer the 2nd at St Andrews Beach to the 4th at Barnbougle.

Feels like the former accommodates more players and sets up for more interesting second shots for those that don't reach the green.

But, don't mind me. SAB is my favorite course Tom has done. Wish I could play it every weekend.

I agree the second at St. Andrews beach is excellent and was probably my favourite hole there.. again I want for the green and paid the price right however!
