What was it about those courses/memberships that preserved the integrity of the original design ?

I don't know enough about those three courses to comment.

Are they essentially intact from opening day ?

If so, that's a tribute to their membership.

I wonder if The Creek and Piping Rock fall into the untouched category ?

I think they would be classified untouched if Oakmont is. I have only played SLCC, and it is essentially the same course laid out by CBM except for a 50 year hiatus with the fifth hole that had been corrected.

I thought Oakmont went through constant changes in the early days.  The story (apocryphal?) is that Fownes added bunkers every time someone hit to an advantageous spot he hadn't considered. 

I think Nigel is right, that SLCC is mostly the same.  They stretched out #13 (Long) some.  One question is whether CBM included the biarritz swale in the green itself (hole #2), or that was done later (and if so, when?).

Camargo was not "turn of the century;" I believe it was built around 1920. But I don't think, other than some bunker work by Tom Doak, that much if anything else has been done to it. I'm sure he knows better than I. In fact, I remember reading Pete Dye's book where he talked about being called to Camargo to discuss changes. He told the board to leave the course alone.

I was under the impression that Holston Hills was renovated BACK to it's original intent.  What an AWESOME golf course.

Not Shoreacres:

I want to second the praise for what's been done at Shoreacres.  It's always been a museum piece, but with the lengthening, the green and fairway expansions and the tree clearing, it's now more magnificent than ever, and quite a test from the back tees.  #5, 7, 10 (new back tee on the other side of the road), 14 (yes, the redan), 15, and 16 are all now longer - some significantly longer with real impact on how the hole plays - #5, 7, 15, and 16 in particular.  7 and 16 are now beastly par 4s into the south wind.  The slope on the redan is now cut at green level, not fringe level and it's now 200+ (rather than 185ish), which is WAY better for the draw shot the hole begs you to hit.  All sorts of great changes out there, including new bunkering and cutting the fairways to feed the ball all the way into the bunkers.  Just unbelievable what they've done.
