12th at Southern Hills
« on: April 27, 2014, 09:20:36 AM »
Anybody know anything about the work being done on the 12th hole at Southern Hills.  The tee is being moved to the left to make it a slightly harder dogleg left and bring the left fairway bunker into play even more off the tee.  I'm assuming Keith Foster is behind this?

Isn't the tee presently right against the fence? If so, there is no room to go back and moving the tee to the left might be a way to get the length back for the second shot. This is the type of hole where too short a second shot changes the difficulty that must have been intended with the slope and creek. This is supposed to be a difficult hole, I think.

Mike,

I can't imagine "too short a second shot" creating more difficulty unless the terrain became more severe.

It's a terrific hole

I mean the short second shot is easier than the longer one the hole was built for.

Yes, Keith is doing it.

I played there last week and they were using the new tee. They have moved it down the hill to the left which makes either makes you move it around the bunker or carry it to crest the hill. If you bail out right you run the risk of running through the fairway. The new tee is lower and thus you can't really see much of the hole from the tee. I don't think it strengthens the quality of the hole, but I think it is an acceptable concession to challenge the pros.

Is the old tee still there and being maintained/used for typical member play or did the new one completely replace it?

Not 100% sure, but it looked like it was still there just 60 yards to the right. I don't think the plan is to use it though. I honestly can't remember how maintained it was.
