I agree there will always be a component that only goes for the driving range on date night or whatever, and there is nothing wrong with that. No more than 1% of those folks will probably go on to take up "real golf." It is a form of golf anyone can enjoy in a few hours after work, at night, with a group of golf and non golf friends in a non threatening way. I know some would consider it the "cheese whiz" of golf (a cheese like product vs. a golf like product) but in a rich country of 330M diverse people, I think its a good thing.
On the other hand, 12 year old me spent a lot of time on a less fancy double deck driving range at Arlington Park Race Track and did to on to be a core golfer, so its not that no one will make the plunge. Its just that most will stay there, or maybe occasionally play at one of those new fangled 15" cup par 3 courses.......
