I mentioned this before, but I think this business is far enough removed from golf that I am struggling to see how folks transfer into playing golf.  If the prices for this gig are that high, I fail to see the incentive for any such business to look for ways to graduate customers people into golf.  Why provide the real thing when its an expensive and risky venture?  Bottom line, I thinks folks are deluding themselves if they believe this sort of thing will increase the number of golfers by any measurable degree.

Ciao

Not sure that is the aim of the business model. Can it hurt though? Does it drive more to play of more away from the game?

No, of course not.  But I took the conversation in the context of it must be good because anything which will grow the game is good.  I am not convinced this business model will have any impact on the growth of golf.  From that perspective, we may as well be talking about bowling  ;D

Sean,

I agree there will always be a component that only goes for the driving range on date night or whatever, and there is nothing wrong with that.  No more than 1% of those folks will probably go on to take up "real golf."  It is a form of golf anyone can enjoy in a few hours after work, at night, with a group of golf and non golf friends in a non threatening way.  I know some would consider it the "cheese whiz" of golf (a cheese like product vs. a golf like product) but in a rich country of 330M diverse people, I think its a good thing.

On the other hand, 12 year old me spent a lot of time on a less fancy double deck driving range at Arlington Park Race Track and did to on to be a core golfer, so its not that no one will make the plunge.  Its just that most will stay there, or maybe occasionally play at one of those new fangled 15" cup par 3 courses.......
