I had the great fortune of going to Punta Mita, Mexico over thanksgiving. I played golf at Punta Mita Golf Club and although the courses were just typical Nicklaus signature designs, I witnessed the incredible "3B" hole on the Pacifico course. This hole is a par 3, that plays anywhere from 195 to 175 yards with a forced carry to an island green located on a nature rock formation in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. I know this site isn't fond of forced carries, but I find this hole to be an exception because there is no other way around it. I had so much fun playing this hole and hitting chip and pitch shots from the rock formations and waste bunkers on the island. I just thought I'd share this fun hole with GCA, along with a few pictures. (Sorry about the poor phone quality.)

I have yet to play the hole, but have only heard great things from friends who had a blast playing there.  One great thing is that is is natural and there is some area that allows a miss to not be a penalty.  Supposedly at low tide it is an island in the sand, so not even a water hazard situation.

Joey, having never been there and never really doing any research on the course, I have a couple questions.  You called the hole 3B, so I assume it is an alternate hole?  Does that mean there are 19 holes on the course?  If so, do you play all 19 or choose to play 3A or 3B?  Also, where is the 4th tee in comparison with 3B?

I'lll answer your question for you.   The island hole should be the 3A hole and another par 3 should be called 3B, which is the alternate hole when the tide is up too high to get out to the island.   Although I have explained this to Punta Mita numerous times, they fail to understand the concept and apparently continue to call the 3B because they think the A means alternate.
The 4th tee is very close the the shortest tee for the island 3rd hole headed back inland.

Not dissimilar to the second hole at the Lofoten Golf Links in northern Norway (extended course opens next year). Well, except the climate - I guess the Pacific is a tad warmer than the Arctic Ocean!

If we are comparing, then Norway wins hands down.
