Guys help me out but Manhattan Woods, Spook Rock, et al of this type are in Rockland County -- am I right or what? This thread is on Westchester's best.

By the way Hudson National is a fine course -- I don't doubt that. But, it's not top ten in the county. From the times I've played the course (four times) the place usually overdoses on the H20 and you get the predictable result that the air game is de rigeur when playing there. I think of Hudson National as the Mountain Ridge (for the application of man-applied H20) of this sort of thing.

The shotmaking aspect of Hudson National is indeed demanding in spots (I do lik the par-3 16th and par-4 18th holes, to name just two), however, is there anything there that really hits a home run in the architectural compartment? Or is it more of a "been there done that" TF design one has seen more than a few times?

Matt, how come i knew you would like the 18th. :)  470 yard par 4, always a moist fairway with a rise (no roll), in the landing area.  270+ probably does get you a little roll.

Matt -

Nobody was discussing Hudson as top 10 in the COUNTRY - only in Westchester.  And the end of the thread just digressed into a quick discussion on Spook Rock across the river.

#10 is the only hole at Hudson that I feel hits a home run in the architectural department.  Love the left side of the green complex where pin placements enjoy a Pinehurst #2-esque challenge. Never seen anything like it in the region.  Shotmaking demands of the drive and the aesthetics are spectacular.

Dan - nice to see you pipe-in on the Spooker.  Hope to talk to you soon.

Corey -- there's plenty of roll in the fairway if you HIT it. I do like the 18th because TF didn't create the garden variety closer I have played countless times. In fact, an argument can easily be made that HN's closer is among the best 3-4 in the county although the course isn't a top ten IMHO.

Scratch:

I never mentioned HN as top 100 for the country -- I'm getting older but I can still type to some degree. I did say in the "county" and HN's not that good to merit that high a placement IMHO.

One other thing regarding Spook Rock -- as a dediacted publinker I've played Spook no less than 40 times over the years and when it first opened it was a course that was way beyond the challenge / architectural aspects of what constituted public golf at that time.

My only issue with Spook Rock is the drainage issue. Too often you had water gather in a few spots -- the 3rd and 4th holes on the front and on the back with #10, #11, #12 and sometimes the fairways at #16 and #18 had issues as well.

Still, a good public course to demonstrate if you can play worth a lick.

My bad on the "county" vs. "country" thing.  You're typing is excellent, btw, Matt.

What do you think are the best closers in Westchester?  WFW, Knollwood, Hudson, others?

Scratch:

You listed a good number of courses with candidates -- I like them all. Hudson National's may fit the mold for certain people but I'm sure you will find just as many who enjoy Knollwood's.

P.S. I have not played it thus far but I'm sure some people will say that Trump's deserves to be considered.

Trump's closer is a good one in the mold of waterless, brute-ish par-4 US Open closers like Oakland Hills, Medinah, WFW.  I just cannot bring myself to give it that much credit given my feelings about the course in general (posted yesterday on this Westchester thread).  But I'll give credit where credit is due and TN's 18 is a good one.

Anglebrook's finisher is solid as well.  I'm trying to think if we're forgetting anything.  Seems like there really arent many great Westchester closers in relation to the quantity of quality courses.
