Jon Wiggett,

I think any golfer who plays in the fall and spends an inordinate amount of time searching for balls amongst the fallen leaves sympathizes with you.

Constantly searching for balls is annoying, irrespective of the agent responsible for concealing them.

But, the greens remain the playing surface requiring the most interest and TLC.

Their quality should be no less than any other playing surface and should exceed the quality of all other playing surfaces because that is where most strokes are played, that's where "score" comes to a conclusion, that's where the ball comes in contact with the surface for the entire time after it's hit.

Do you really care if the rough is uneven or motley ?

Do you care if the fairways are inconsistent ?

It's the greens that need to be in the best condition, not the rough or fairways or bunkers

I am advocating two things.  Focus on making greens firmer, not faster.  Second, let the members keep the money rather than push for stupidly expensive speeds.

As others have said, the USA golfers of my acquaintance will sacrifice almost any other expenditure in the budget before they'd let their greens run three feet slower than they current run. People like smooth, fast greens more than they like any other aspect of a golf course.

Sean,

I understand your advocacy, but, keeping greens firm in the Spring in the Northeast or in the south in the summer is a fantasy.
Mother Nature will always dictate terms, so one should advocate for firmer greens when permitted by the boss.

As to your second point, it's the members who dictate terms and vote/advocate for faster greens.

And, you might be surprised at how peer pressure and competition amongst clubs is responsible for producing faster greens.  I

Pat,

here in the UK most casual golfers don't really care about the score so are less focussed on having perfect putting surfaces. I agree that the greens ought to be as good as the rest of the course but that is as far as it goes for most repeat players. As for the rough, I think that here in the UK it is either cut so you can find your ball or not cut so you often don't. We don't have the watering or feeding issues that seems to be often the case in the US.
