While I don't have a lot to add, this post did lead me to the following link on the Stanford Golf Course website with aerials and George C Thomas's architecture guidelines. 

I'd say a number of the holes could benefit from some bunker and green restoration and tree removal.

Instead of a top 4 college owned courses, because I think we all agree Yale wins pretty handily, how about a top 4 "where the golf team plays" or hosts a tournament? Example, UCLA = Riviera.

Oklahoma State (Karsten Creek) and Kansas State (Colbert Hills) would probably outrank Washington State. I haven't played any of them.

College Teams host tournaments all over the place, so maybe the criteria should be where they conduct their practices or the school actually owns.

USC-Aiken having Palmetto Golf Club as their home course is pretty solid

What?  Did Texas Tech Rawls course fade from memory? Unfortunately, I didn't play it.  Any thoughts on how good it is compared to some of those named, if you've played them?  What is Georgia Tech's home course?

I don't necessarily agree that Yale wins this one hands down...

The C/C Warren course at ND is a great course.  My only wish is that it didn't get so crowded, but it is a wonderful course in an otherwise light South Bend public course market.  I actually find this to be one of the more underrated courses overall too

It's been years since I played the Rawls course and it was actually my first experience with a Tom Doak course.  I thought it was great as well

Indiana University's GC is a shame.  That course has a lot of potential and for a university of our size and location, we should have a much better golf course.  The fact that Purdue's Kampen course absolutely crushes IU's is a travesty

That may be true (I haven't played Kampen), but what are the greens fees at Kampen? When I was at Indiana ten years ago, I think it was $12 to play the IU course. Just checked the website, it looks like it's $15 to walk during the week and $20 on weekends. The course could be better, but I don't know that the university or the residents would be crazy about upgrading the course if it would mean substantially higher greens fees. And I don't know that the university would have much to gain by investing a lot of money in the course.

Much the same as college football itself, a 4-course playoff is unlikely to allow enough contenders into the mix or satisfy the public. Look for the college course playoff to expand to 16 courses, and look for the college football playoff to eventually do the same.

The fees at Kampen are much higher plus they get football season traffic from alums, which as a fellow IU alum, we know that no one really travels there for football season...

I think this year will test the willingness of Purdue alumni to travel to watch football games. PU is certainly P-U this year.

But anyway, as I mentioned, IU's course could use a makeover. There are certainly some good holes and some that could be improved pretty easily if the money were there - especially if they were going to clear out some trees. But I wouldn't look to the university to shell out a bunch of money to improve the course if it meant the fees were going to double. I don't think the locals or the students would be all that crazy about it and I don't think I would disagree with them.

I would put Taconic (Williams) Orchards (Mount Holyoke) and Seven Oaks (Colgate) up against the three, non-CT courses on the original list.

I hadn't heard about this.  I know they did some massive work a few years ago, but I wasn't aware of any further work
