Pete Dye Golf Club

I am new to this site so if this topic has been discussed before, I apologize. Why isn't this course in Golf Digest's top 100?

I am relatively new as well and as a rejoinder to your question, I will ask, "why hasn't anyone replied to Mr. Hurricane's question?" ;)

DCarroll,

I've never played it, and I believe it's private, thus it's hard to make an informed decision and answer that question based on pictures and heresay.

I'm not sure why this course isn't in the top 100 either. I know Ran has his reservations about this course. In the past he has listed his reasons. If i'm not mistaken one of his points was that the par 3s are weak. However, I think most people on this site look upon this course quite favorably.
the interviewer asked beck how he felt "being the bob dylan of the 90's" and beck quitely responded "i actually feel more like the bon jovi of the 60's"

Hurricane,

It isnt the easiest place to get to, or get on, and as such it has been quite a while since I played it, but I think it is a great course and club, I have always been surprised also that it is not in the Top 100.  Wasnt it at one time a few years ago?

I thought there were some great holes, as to the comment of the par 3s being weak, I recall the dropshot par 3 (the hole number escapes me) immediately following the drive through the abandoned mine shaft as being dramatic and a good par three.  Also the earlier one on the front was a prototypical Dye par three bulkheaded around a lake with stones (very remininsent of one of the par 3s on the front at Black Wolf Run).

I also love the use of the sites previous Coal Mining theme worked into the course.

It is a wonderful place.

Dan,
I think there are a few weak holes on the backside, beginning with twelve.  Of the 16000 golf courses in the U.S. picking the top hundred is at best difficult.  I think there may be three or four hundred courses that are worthy of being in the top hundred.

Thanks for the feedback. I played there last month and loved the place. The par 4 12th that Tommy didn't like may have been the weakest hole, but it is a strategic short hole. You can't have all 450+ yard par 4s, can you? As for the 3's, none of them were easy and #7 that Turboe referred to is pretty dramatic. #16 is 246 from the tips to the center and with the pin all of the way back could stretch to 260. It's downhill, but 246 is 246.

The fives were nice with two monsters (580 & 603) and two reachable ones. I loved the collection of two shotters as well. #2, 10, and 18 are among my favorites anywhere. I also loved how they left the old, rusting mining equipment in the rough on some of the holes. The use of the mining shaft to get from 6 to 7 was cool too ( literally as it was 90+ outside and 60 in the shaft).

It may be hard to get to and even harder to get on, but I found the course to be well worth the effort.

I love this golf course.  IMO it is the third best Dye effort in the US (Whistling Straits, The Golf Club).  When GD's list came out, several of us felt that the two biggest errors were the ommision of PDGC and the unbelievably low ranking of Kingsley.  From the tips, it is a real brute though.  I wonder if it turned people off.  #10 is one of my favorite holes in the entire country.
And I took full blame then, and retain such now.  My utter ignorance in not trumpeting a course I have never seen remains inexcusable.

David -

Where is Kingsley? I have not heard of this course and am always up for a new challenge.

I liked PDGC's #18 so much I have a picture of it in my office next to my #16 CPC, #15 Black Diamond, #8 PBGL, and #18 Shadow Creek.

Thanks Scott, the course looks great and GO CANES. I think it is great that VA Tech and Miami are going to the ACC. It's a much better fit. Now back to golf.

Crookicane... what's up with that. Let me know when W&L get a football team and then you can talk smack.
