Nearest the Blimp - Prize on offer
« on: May 16, 2013, 09:28:08 AM »
Whilst the Tiger Woods thread descended into racist name calling, I applied some high school geometry to work out the flight of Tiger Wood's ball on the 14th hole on sunday.

The first step was to work out the location of the blimp.

Before i reveal the answer to the two people who are still interested in the topic, there is a  Golf Course architecture prize on offer to whoever is can get closest to predicting the (horizontal, plan view) location of the blimp on the photo below.  Either describe the location  or re-post the picture with location marked.

Good luck.

Not sure how you're looking for an answer, but I'm guessing 1,000 yards in front of the 14th tee and 300 yards right of the direct tee-to-green line.

This will certainly be interesting as it is MATHEMATICALLY IMPOSSIBLE to figure out the location of the camera or the ball just from the 2D image. Other location aware systems like Hawk-Eye (tennis) and MLB tracking systems all require 3 or more cameras to figure out the position of objects in 3D space.

Good luck with your quixotic quest, but I would bet a lot of money that you are wrong.

I agree with Richard that this is mathematically and geometrically impossible to do.

Jim's position is between the 8th green and 9th tee.

For fun, I'll guess that it was somewhere over the 17th tee.

David, I look forward to your geometric analysis.  Let us know the altitude the blimp was at and what direction it was moving during the 9 seconds the ball was in the air, and whether the camera was zooming during the shot.

1/4 mile off shore over the Atlantic.

I second this guess.  I'm basing it mostly on the view of the trunks of the trees far side hazard.  I don't think it was much further offline because the entire slope to the shoreline was visible and that is probably not much steeper than a 2:1 slope.

I'm guessing at least 1/4 mile away from the golf course.

And if you ever saw °Black Sunday" you would know why.

Now David. Since we know Tiger was the ONLY interesting thing on the course, the blimp hung directly over him the whole day. Musta been hovering exactly 125 yd from the tee right over the pond, huh? And it had it's ball-tracker on so it could make dead cert that Tiger ..............  ::)

Enjoy the quest.

Where is everybody? Where is Tommy N? Where is John K? Where is Jay F? What has happened here? Has my absence caused this chaos? I'm sorry. All my rowdy friends have settled down ......... somewhere else!
