How about starting a discussion returning to the theme of accessible golf.

USGVT has propertied where these kinds of venues could serve these vets, beginners, and time challenged players, retirees: a sort of recasting of the executive layout but with a core therapuetic mission.

How cool would it be to tie these vets to beginning golf programs and get some good energy going

Thanks for posting that, Ward -- very moving. And thanks to Jack Nicklaus for helping out on a very worthy cause.

Kind of puts the Casey Martin story in perspective.

Great stuff, Wardo.  They seem to have blocked the video here in Old Blighty, but I get the point, and it is a very poignant one.

Thanks

Rich

Several years ago the CDGA and the Sunshine Through Golf Foundation built a 3 hole golf course at our headquarters in Lemont ,Il which is completely accessible to individuals with disabilities.  the greens were designed to take wheelchir traffic and the like.  Play is free.  We provide free clinics for disabled children and young adults as well as disabled war vets throughout the season at various courses around the Chicago area and the course is used in conjunction with those efforts.  We also do some turfgrass research on the grounds.  Not as ambitious but it helps with our greater mission to provide recreation through golf to this community.

Ward, thanks for posting.  Byron Vincent organized a drive for equipment donations a few years ago... http://www.golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,33493.0.html  Perhaps it is time to do so again.

Great story.  A long time ago I remember grousing about having to put in expensive ADA access features for our clubhouse.  Later, at a NGCOA meet, I got to play with a disabled golfer and got a four hour dose of humble pie.  We didn’t buy a special golf cart for disabled golfers, as suggested by some programs, because it seemed to me that these would have to be somewhat specialized to an individual’s particular needs.  But I did promise myself to work with anyone who wanted to play our course and to figure out how that could be done effectively.

Does anyone know of other courses that provide such carts and services to the public?

The issue really has never come up as dramatically as shown here.  Sure, we have our share of old guys with aches and pains and mobility issues but want to keep playing.  We’ve never made them take handicap flags on their carts so that they can park next to tees and greens and to avoid getting accosted by other golfers or the grounds crew.  That, too, hasn’t been much of an issue here.  Just a little training of staff and the occasional explanation to the public.

I’d love to learn more about how other courses handle these issues so we might be better prepared to handle access with as much dignity as possible.

Shelly, the year my friend Billy qualified for the Western Open we played a "round" with three kids on Tuesday afternoon -- there were a bunch of PGA pros and (I believe) all of the guys from the Illinois Section that played as well. I got to carry the bags for two of the kids as well as Billy, but one of the young men insisted on carrying his own bag (the other two loved having someone carrry their bag just like the pro). Awesome afternoon, but unfortunately for Billy it was the highlight of his week -- someone else took his bag for the actual tournament  :'( and Billy missed the cut by a million.

Dave a number of Dept of VA hospitals have golf courses (or had golf courses that are now run by the city they are in or a non-profit).  The courses are utilized in various therapy regiments but are also open to the public and honestly are under utilized.  That being said I'd be surprised if each VA course had specialized carts.

I've played two VA courses (Roseburg OR and LA, CA) and they were both short 9 hole courses.  I'm currently on rotation at the West LA VA hospital and I'm keeping the clubs in the car.  The course was built by the members at Hillcrest CC shortly after WWII.

Other VA facilities I'm aware of (or quickly found on the internet) with golf courses.
Los Angeles - http://www.heroesgolfcourse.com/about/
Roseburg OR - Roseburg VA Medical Center
Bedford MA - http://www.hanscomservices.com/PatriotGolfCourse.asp
Tomah Wisconsin - http://www.tomah.va.gov/Tomah_VA_Veterans_Golf_Course.asp
Saint Cloud MN - http://www.stcloudmac.com/golfpro.html
Murfreesboro, TN - Alvin C. York Veterans Hospital
Northport, NY - Northport Veterans Affairs Medical Center
Canandaigua, NY - Canandaigua Veterans Affairs Medical Center
Lyons, NJ - http://www.bernards.org/Departments_Services/parks_recreation/pr_fa_coakley.aspx
Chillicothe, OH - Chillicoth VA Medical Center
Danville, IL - VA Illiana Health Care System

My guess is there are many others out there (or at least were many others).

Mark;  glad you did that.  I have had the same experience.  A number of the pros used to come out regularly when the tourney was at Cog.  Tim Clark, one of the really good guys, donated $20,000 to the Foundation after his experience at our course with some of the kids.  There are some class acts on the tour.
