Pinehurst # 1 course-What's to like?
« on: January 20, 2013, 01:37:19 AM »
I found this blip on the radar screen of GCA regarding the Pinehurst #1 course: http://www.golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,19959.0.html

Evidently, some find at least one good hole among the 18. Who else has experience with the uno and would you mind sharing it (and photos, too?!?!) with the brotherhood?

I thought it was a cute, old-time shorty with some pretty and pretty easy holes. Sort of a grab a cart and a twelve pack after four putting and chilli-dipping your way around #2 experience.  They'll probably ruin it with a thoughtful redo.

Terry, I agree with the grab some beers and de-stress on #1.  Good assessment.

"They'll probably ruin it with a thoughtful redo."

Terry - a concept/thought that has never occurred to me, but a genuine possibility (at No. 1 and elsewhere), i.e. that a modest course of a certain kind can actually be messed up (and made to stop serving its traditional function) by a thoughtful redo.  Fascinating. And it suggests that an A. Hills is better suited to some renovations than a C&C.

Perhaps a decent hickory course?

I haven't played the course but figure 1 and 3 will be the hickory courses.  Here is a thread about changes made to #1 late last year.  The thread also discusses renovation of the course.  The greens were also changed to MiniVerde on #1 last year, supposedly/maybe a trial run for the other courses.

Edit: having trouble working on the iPad/phone and forgot the link.

The only place I played hickory at in Pinehurst was Pine Needles, it was great for hickory.  I'd think Mid Pines would be ideal for that as well.

Regarding Pinehurst #1 and a less trying/stressful round of golf compared to #2, I'd choose Mid Pines 100 times out of 100 with that in mind over #1.  Just my opinion.

I played #1 about 10 years ago with my wife.  I recall little (if anything) about it, for whatever that says.  What's the history?  Is the #1 today exactly as Ross laid it out originally, or is it an amalgam of sorts?  Ross scholars . . . ?

Well, No. 1 has more history in its fingernail than 99% of the American courses for starters. It's pretty much bad form to post our own blogs and whatnot on here but there is a piece I'm still tumbling with that may be worth bringing up on this here thread. It's not finished but there is some info on there than a few of you may find interesting. The imagery comes from UNC-CH, DigitalNC and the Tufts Archives. You can find the work in progress here:

The new Bermuda greens give the course some new life and there are some excellent holes on #1... My daughter and I played there in Dec. and I think it cost $ 35 total for both us with a cart.
